SERVICES

Soft tissue therapy is helpful for a multitude of musculoskeletal problems and is of value whether you are a sportsperson, an active individual or a more sedentary person. It is also a great treatment for relieving stress and anxiety through its effect on the parasympathetic nervous system, encouraging the 'rest and digest' rather than the 'fight or flight' response.

So are you suffering from aches and pains? Stresses and strains? Do you feel you are “not as healthy as you should be”?
Why not try soft tissue therapy to ease your physical discomfort and relieve the effects of stress and anxiety – see how much it can enhance your feelings of wellbeing!

In our first session I would complete a case history including any relevant physical assessments and then develop a treatment plan tailored to your particular needs. So don’t delay any longer – contact me to arrange an appointment and take that first step on the path back to wellness!

Call me on 07721 597102 or email me at chris@chrissalvary.co.uk to discuss your requirements.

TREATMENTS: SOFT TISSUE THERAPY/SPORTS MASSAGE THERAPY

Soft Tissue Therapy is the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, tendons and ligaments. It is applicable not just to sports people but to anybody wishing to guard against or recover from a soft tissue injury.

Individually tailored treatment and advice (which may include stretching/strengthening exercises) aims to:

  • help relieve the stress and tension which hinders the achievement of optimum performance
  • reduce the likelihood of injury during exercise
  • speed up the recovery process and aid rehabilitation after injury
  • ensure full range of joint movement and increase muscle flexibility
  • improve postural and general body awareness

  • TREATMENTS: SCARWORK

ScarWork is a form of treatment developed by an American bodyworker named Sharon Wheeler designed to work specifically on scar tissue arising from surgery or traumatic injury. Her work is now being taught to experienced bodyworkers outside the US. There are relatively few trained practitioners in the UK at present but this number is growing.

Many people have scars from operations such as mastectomies, caesarean sections, joint replacements and other surgeries as well as from traumatic injuries such as burns. These scars can be the source of a number of problems which can often affect activities of daily living.

With mastectomies, for example, scars may be painful and uneven, while further problems may develop with axillary web syndrome or cording. The overall result of all these is restricted movement and loss of function e.g. reduced movement of the shoulder and arm on the affected side due to pain and lack of confidence.

ScarWork is a very gentle treatment with many of the techniques incorporating delicate light work which improves the quality of tissue. It should not feel painful but may give mild sensation without pain. The aim is to integrate scar tissue into the fascial web (fascia in the body is like a web of tissue which surrounds and runs through muscles, bones, tendons , ligaments, organs). Scar tissue should be seen not as something to be ‘broken down’ or ‘got rid of’ but is valuable material that needs to be freed up and integrated back into that web. Scar tissue quality is capable of changing quite quickly. Lumps, bumps, gaps, ridges, holes, knots and strings in the tissue can become smoother and this can often be felt after just one session.

Gentle work on new scars seems to speed up the healing for a little while right after the work, while even older scars often show further improvement right after the work. Small changes in scar tissue accumulate and the improvements appear to be permanent and assist in better integration and function.

    TREATMENTS: BOWEN TECHNIQUE

Bowen therapy is a soft tissue remedial therapy that involves the therapist using fingers or thumbs to move over muscle, ligament, tendon and fascia in various parts of the body. This therapy can be effective to help relieve everyday stresses and revitalise the whole person.

Each Bowen therapy session varies according to the particular problems of the client. By focusing on the lower and mid back and legs, the upper back, shoulders and the neck, a sense of wellbeing can be achieved, helping relaxation, aiding sleep – helping to remove everyday stress and anxiety that can make us feel under-par or prevent us functioning at our optimum.
COMPLEMENTARY AND NATURAL HEALTHCARE COUNCIL REGISTRATION

Both massage and the Bowen Technique have been accepted onto the register of the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC). Endorsed by the Department of Health, CNHC provides assurance to the public, health insurance companies, doctors and other healthcare professionals that the Registered Practitioner has met all recognised standards for safe practice. Registration with CNHC is seen as the “gold standard” for complementary health practitioners.

I am a Registered Practitioner with the CNHC for both Massage and the Bowen Technique and I am also a member of the following professional associations:

  • Sports Massage Association (SMA)
  • Bowen Therapy Professional Association (BTPA)

  • ABOUT ME

I originally trained as a librarian and worked in further education colleges for 15 years, but following a mid-life career crisis discovered sports massage and gained a Diploma from the London School of Sports Massage in 1992. I qualified in the Bowen Technique in 1997 and now practise in Hertfordshire and in the City of London.

I gained my MSc in Complementary Therapy: Bodywork in 2003 from the University of Westminster, where I also worked up until December 2009 as part-time Senior Lecturer/Clinic Supervisor on the degree in Health Sciences: Remedial Massage and Neuromuscular Therapy. I also lectured part-time on the University of Bedfordshire’s BSc Sports Therapy degree until April 2015.

I have been involved in disability sport for many years and have worked with various Great Britain teams at many international events including the Paralympic Games in Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, and at the Macau holding camp prior to the Beijing Games in 2008. At London 2012 I was the sports massage therapist to the Paralympic 7-a-side (Cerebral Palsy) and 5-a-side (Blind) football teams. I am currently working with the England and GB Cerebral Palsy football teams and was so proud to see them finish 5th (their best ever!) at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

A passion for track and field athletics led me to take up sprinting, long jump and triple jump in my late forties (in search of my second childhood perhaps?) and I regularly compete in masters’ events both locally and nationally.
    TESTIMONIALS

    MASSAGE

“I have regular sports massage and see it as an integral part of my training... as important as all the other parts of my sporting lifestyle....I look forward to it because I know that I may have a few aches or slight strains that really need working on and will no longer be a worry after the massage” SB, Olympic triathlete

“...when I was training for the Washington Marathon...it seemed to me then that my training was trying to tone me up at a greater rate than my muscles could absorb and I imagined I had come up against a sort of log jam....I came upon you by chance and asked if you could somehow help the benefits of the training to sink in. I doubt that made professional sense to you, but your ministrations certainly made sense and I valued them greatly.” IM, businessman and marathon runner (the first, last and definitely only one!)

Bowen therapy always sorts my back out in a few days
    Beech W on January 09, 2018 at 22:37:47
I go to Chris regularly for Bowen therapy to treat my back. I went a few days ago with severe muscle spasms that can cause pain and discomfort at the slightest turn. 24 hours later I was able to walk comfortably. 48 hours later i was flying to Jersey and dancing at a birthday party, with all but the slightest twinge gone.

Very good and value for money. Understands running and associated "problems". good with clients. I'd recommend to others.

    Excellent

I would thoroughly recommend Chris Salvary. She helped me during and after my training for the Virgin London Marathon earlier this year. I trust her completely and wouldn't hesitate to recommend her.

    Highly Recommended

Chris worked on getting flexibility back in my knee after I had a complete knee replacement. The biggest issue was trying to bend it enough to be able to get back onto my track motorbike, using Chris rather than the physio recommended by my knee consultant was the best thing I did, I was back on the bike within a couple of months compared to the 6 months I'd been told it would take. I can't recommend Chris highly enough, she's brilliant.

...My go to Thearapist for Sports Massage.....
Jane Allen on December 01, 2017 at 12:21:27
Chris has been my go to Thearapist for sports massage for over 15 years. I highly recommend her compassionate, always professional manner. She helps get you over the frustrating "niggle injuries" that can come with a hobby of regular sport participation (in my case, running); as well as maintaining the body by relaxing tensions in your muscles from everyday use. I always come out of Chris's therapy feeling so much better.

    First treatment to ever help
    Miss M Minkin on November 29, 2017 at 16:10:29
I have had back issues for over 5 years and have gone through many different treatments with different specialist and nothing has ever come to any help. Treatment with Chris is the first time I have ever had any progression in easing my pain and discomfort, even now being at university, I only trust Chris to treat me and know that her treatment will work. Cannot recommend highly enough

Excellent sports massage therapist, the best I've been to!
    Alexandra on November 23, 2017 at 09:32:01
Chris is an excellent sports massage therapist and always manages to get right to point of the problem. She is knowledgeable, professional and friendly and I always feel healed after each session. I've had problems with my knee recently and after she'd worked on it, it felt so much better. And she has a heat pad on the bed under the cover so you don't get cold!

Very professional and responsive to need
Anne Lippitt on November 22, 2017 at 17:31:54
Really understands my needs. I have had a series of injuries and her therapy is responsive to the problems, complementing my physio. In fact she is often more effective than usual physio in getting more targeted soft tissue manipulation. She also helps with injury avoidance.

    The Best

I trust Chris Salvary implicitly to work on my soft tissue. I have been a client of hers ever since she started to practice and I believe having a regular massage with her has helped me keep my body in good shape - even after hip replacements! She is extremely knowledgeable about massage therapy and is always learning new techniques to help clients. She is special!
