3 Remedies for Heartburn
Heartburn is very common, it is also very unpleasant. It has been said to feel like someone has lit a small bonfire in your chest, and the burning is making it’s way all the way up to your neck. This sensation is caused by stomach acid backing up into the oesophagus.
Other than medication, there are also natural heartburn remedies and lifestyle changes that can help you get some relief from heartburn.
Calcium is the active ingredient in many of the over-the-counter antacids. It is one commonly used "natural" heartburn remedy.
Here are some natural ways to combat heartburn
Don't Overeat
There is a ring-like muscle known as the lower oesophageal sphincter where the oesophagus opens into the stomach. This muscle acts as a valve and naturally opens when you swallow, belch or vomit. Otherwise, it should stay closed. This mechanism theoretical should prevent the acidic contents of the stomach from going up into the oesophagus.
This muscle is weakened or dysfunctional in people with acid reflux. Also, when there is too much pressure on the muscle, acid can squeeze through the opening causing acid reflux.
Most reflux symptoms take place after a meal and can occur especially after larger meals.
One step that will help minimise acid reflux is to avoid eating large meals.
Lose Weight
If you are overweight, losing this excess weight should be one of your priorities if you suffer from acid reflux.
Excessive pressure inside the abdomen is one of the reasons for acid reflux. Losing tummy fat might relieve some of your symptoms.
Controlled studies support this, showing that weight loss may relieve reflux symptoms.
Limit your Intake of Carbonated Beverages
Carbonated drinks can temporarily increase the frequency of belching, studies have shown that this may promote acid reflux.
