4 Health Benefits of Massage
Share
Love getting a massage? Then you’ll love to know the benefits go far beyond feeling floaty and zen afterwards. Just check out these 4 health benefits of massage:
1. Massage eases sore muscles
If you have aches and pains, a massage can be a glorious go-to to get them ironed out.
In fact, one 2011 study published in the ‘Annuals of Internal Medicine’ revealed massage is just as helpful as other chronic back pain treatments. A similar study, published in ‘Pain Medicine’ found people who had 10 massage therapy sessions over 12 weeks saw significant improvements in lower back pain – which can be very hard to treat. The effects were long-lasting, too, as 75% of participants still felt better after 24 weeks!
2. Keep bugs at bay
Massage as flu prevention? It’s possible. A Cedars-Sinai Medical Center study, published in the ‘Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine’, revealed that Swedish massage alters the immune response, by boosting the white blood cells that fight infection.
3. Combats the effects of sitting
If you work in an office, you’re probably used to feeling stiff and sore after spending all day at a desk. As well as regular breaks and stretching, massage might help relieve some of that ‘postural stress’ in the neck and shoulders.
4. Feel happier
If you feel a million bucks after a massage, you’re not alone. A Taiwanese review of 17 studies summarised that massage can significantly reduce depressive symptoms.
And a study published in the ‘Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry’ showed people who are depressed and anxious were happier and more relaxed, with lower stress levels, after massage.
Want more proof? How about the 2005 study that found women diagnosed with breast cancer reported feeling less angry and depressed after having massage three times a week?
Many more massage benefits
That’s not all. Regular massage has been found to help you get a better night’s sleep, alleviate headaches, enjoy improved digestion, and even lower your blood pressure. Sound good? Book a massage in your local area.
