Homeopathy for Eczema

Homeopathy is one of a range of natural therapies utilised to treat a wide range of ailments and conditions, including eczema.  They can provide a viable alternative or complement to conventional medical treatments, and often come with few or no negative side effects.

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of healing that uses carefully selected remedies to stimulate the body’s natural resistance and ability to heal.  This uses customised remedies that have been repeatedly diluted in water, with each treatment chosen for its ability to mimic the symptoms of the ailment being experienced.  Homeopathy approaches any ailment or condition holistically, examining an individual’s health in its totality, and attempting to heal it without suppressing the natural ability of the body to heal itself.

What is Eczema?

Eczema, or dermatitis, is characterised by irritated skin, with symptoms that include itchiness, dryness and a rash.  It typically affects the face and scalp, hands, elbows and knees.  It is thought that eczema on the hands may be caused by excessive washing of the hands, which irritates the skin by stripping it of valuable oils, moisture and protection. Eczema is thought to be triggered by a range of factors, including pollens, cosmetics, household chemicals and psychological stress. There are two forms of eczema, namely:

  • Atopic eczema – this form often affects children in infancy, and may be genetically related.  Some other known triggers include some foods, especially peanuts and dairy products – which are both thought to be important sources of intolerances in children
  • Contact dermatitis – this form of eczema is thought to be the result of contact with irritants such as chemicals, or contact with a range of allergens which irritate the skin and trigger the eczema

Conventional medication involves applying creams to the affected area, or taking a course of oral antihistamines.

How Can Homeopathy Help Eczema?

A homeopath will typically assess your general health and lifestyle before recommending a treatment for your eczema.  This will attempt to relieve the itching and irritation of the skin being experienced.  In Australia it is currently an unregulated profession, so ensure you consult the Australian Register of Homoeopaths (AROH), who will be able to verify the accreditation and qualifications of your practitioner.
