How to Choose a Massage Therapist
Share
Fancy a massage? Whether you have a niggling sore spot, an injury, or simply wish to unwind after a busy week, a massage can be heavenly. But given the industry is unregulated in Australia, how do you choose the therapist for you?
You can start right here with our handy guide to choosing a massage therapist:
Know what you need
We seek massages for all sorts of reasons. And while all massages manipulate soft tissue, a Swedish massage and sports massage are designed to do this in different ways. That’s why it’s a good idea to find a massage therapist whose services (and experience) match your needs.
Our
massage page lists some of the more common massage therapies you might like to try, with links to finding therapists in your area.
You may also like to let your chosen therapist know about your massage goals. Are you just after a one-off treatment? Or are you an athlete needing to resolve injuries and get back to play sooner? Different modalities have different outcomes, so be sure to find a therapist whose goals match yours.
Check their qualifications
Be aware that anyone can call themselves a massage therapist in Australia. And there’s no legal requirement to hold a formal massage qualification. So it’s wise to do some digging before you make a booking.
A good starting point is to check the therapist is registered with the
Australian Association of Massage Therapists (AAMT). This can provide peace of mind that they have been properly trained, and adhere to a code of ethics.
Next steps
At the end of the day, choosing a massage therapist is all about finding one who you like – and whose treatment style aligns with your goals and preferences. How will you know? The best way is to book a session and try them out. Many practitioners will offer shorter ‘taster’ massages, so you can get a sense of their style before investing further.
