The 6 Best Natural Oils for Massage
When using oils, it is important to have a good oil base. Massage therapists use aromatherapy oils such as lavender in combination with base oil.
The base oil lubricates the skin for the massage itself, it also nourishes it. The following are some of the most common massage oils to begin when you're getting started as a massage therapist:
1. Almond Oil
One of the most commonly used base oils is sweet almond oil with it’s relatively inexpensive price and its ability to readily be absorbed into the skin. The fragrance of the oil itself is light, but it can still be combined with aromatherapy scents. It is important to remember that this oil should not be used on someone who has a nut allergy.
2. Apricot Kernel Oil
Apricot kernel oil is another very popular base oil, it has a very similar texture and consistency to sweet almond oil, but it costs a bit more. This oil makes a great backup if you're working with clients who are allergic to nuts.
3. Jojoba Oil
This oil is very popular, particularly among those with acne, since it seems to have antibacterial properties. Jojoba oil can be a bit expensive, but it has a long shelf life. You could consider mixing jojoba oil with a cheaper base oil such as sweet almond or apricot kernel oil to make it last longer.
4. Grape Seed Oil
With its neutral fragrance, grape-seed oil has a very light texture that won't leave your clients feeling greasy or overpowered by a strong odour. Its great as a base oil.
5. Avocado Oil
Pressed from the avocado fruit, avocado oil is a heavier deep green oil and is usually mixed with lighter massage oils such as sweet almond oil.
6. Cocoa Butter
A rich oil with a distinctive aroma, cocoa butter is solid at room temperature and has a heavy texture, so it is often blended with other oils or it is used for small areas only.
