Cushing’s disease, also known as hypercortisolism is caused by having too much of the hormone, cortisol, in the body. It can cause obesity, roundness in the face, fat increases around the neck, arms and legs, thin skin, high blood sugar, anxiety, weak muscles and fatigue. Some cases can produce purple marks around the abdomen, thigh and breast. Excess cortisol can be cause by excessive natural production of or administration of cortisol and will affect which treatment options are most appropriate. Treatment options include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, lifestyle changes and cortisol-inhibiting drugs.
