Epiglottitis is an inflammation of the epiglottis which is the flap of skin at the back of the throat. It is a condition which commonly occurs in young children and can exhibit fever, a sore throat, muffled voice and difficulty swallowing. Treatment can include the use of antibiotics, humidified oxygen, and steroids to help reduce swelling. Epiglottitis can obstruct the airways and is therefore considered a medical emergency.
