Stuttering is a frequent repetition of words or parts of words which affect the normal flow of talking. The cause of stuttering is unknown however it often begins in childhood and as such is often associated with being a developmental disorder. Stuttering can be embarrassing for the individual, it can cause stress, anxiety, frustration and having lasting impacts on the individual’s social development. There are a variety of behaviours which can be classed as stuttering such as complete voice blocks, licking the lips, nasal snorting, and closing the eyes when speaking. Treatment for stuttering can include biofeedback, psychotherapy, speech therapy, supportive treatment, relaxation therapies, and breath control.
