Tetanus, also commonly referred to as lockjaw is a bacterial infection which can be contracted through open or exposed wounds. Tetanus can be produce muscle contractions, spasms and cramping. Pain often originates in the jaw but can spread through the neck, arms, legs and stomach and is extremely painful. Affected individuals receive treatment in hospital where they receive a series of antibiotics and antitoxins and the wound is drained as necessary. There are also treatment options in traditional Chinese Medicine. Tetanus is rare due to vaccination.
