Tourette’s syndrome is a neurological disorder in which sufferers exhibit involuntary movements, unintelligible sounds, echoing, uncontrollable grunts and uncontrolled speech which may include obscenities. Tics is the term used in reference to these involuntary movements or sounds. They may be motor or vocal, simple or complex. Simple tics appear to have no meaning while complex tics engage more than one muscle group or appear to be meaningful. Under tension or stress tics increase, and decrease when a person is relaxed or focussed on a task. Attempts to suppress the tic may lead to a more severe outburst later. There is no treatment available as such but relaxation therapies, creative activities and support can all be beneficial.
