Welcome to Kensal Rise Acupuncture
Mary first became interested in traditional Chinese medicine while pregnant with her first child, inspired by the beneficial effect it had or her own immune system and its effectiveness in treating muscular pain.
Since then she studied acupuncture for three years at The London College of Traditional Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (LCTA) gaining a BSc degree. She has also received further training in cosmetic acupuncture and attended gynaecology lectures with Jeffrey Yuen. Before studying acupuncture, Mary started a medical degree and developed a solid grounding in western pathology and physiology.
She has practised Hatha yoga for fifteen years and brings elements from both Indian and Japanese medical traditions to her acupuncture treatments. Mary is interested in providing a bridge between ancient traditional medicine and modern western medical theories to provide an integrated approach to healing.
Mary treats most western medical conditions, (see list of WHO conditions treated with acupuncture) and is happy to work with people taking western medications. She is developing a personal specialism in womens health and treats people going through IVF as well as treating a range of gynaecological conditions from PMS to menopausal symptoms.
She also treats children and pregnant women and is particularly interested in using acupuncture to treat childhood asthma and morning sickness.
Mary is currently carrying out research into the role of acupuncture in immunity and embryo development and is hoping to begin a MSc degree in this area.
A typical treatment may incorporate the use of moxa (heat conductive herb) or a heat-lamp, cupping or guasha alongside acupuncture. Dietary and life-style advice may also be offered.
Why Acupuncture?
Acupuncture has been successfully used for over three thousand years to rebalance and rejuvenate.
From a western medical perspective, acupuncture has been shown to reduce pain, boost the immune system, relieve stress as well as being useful in treating specific medical complaints (see Conditions treated).
Acupuncture is based upon traditional Chinese, Japanese and Indian theories of healing where the mind and body have always been seen to be connected.
Emotional aspects of healing and wellness are therefore addressed when treating somebody with acupuncture. Acupuncture relies on the concept of qi, which is similar to the idea of prana or vital force.
Acupuncturists use fine needles (as fine as a human hair) which are placed at specific points around the body to move qi and gently promote balance and well-being.
Acupuncture can also be used safely alongside western medicine. Please feel free to call to discuss your individual requirements
