Tai Chi
Tai Chi (or taiichuan as it is also written) is a form of martial art that has developed over hundreds of years. Tai Chi is, unlike martial arts like Karate and Kung-fu, practiced in a slow and deliberate manner.
Whilst Tai Chi is a martial art it is not taught with any particular emphasis on its martial side. Many, if not most, people practice Tai Chi for a number of other reasons including stress relief, increased fitness and the simple pleasure of learning something new.
Chi Kung
Chi Kung (or qigong) is a form of exercise used to help with focus, strength and concentration. Some Chi Kung exercises are completed with the person doing them completely stationary others, like those in the ba duan jin follow a cycle or pattern.
Chi Kung exercises are often used in class as a way of warming up as well as getting students in to the correct frame of mind for the lesson to come.
Ba Duan Jin
The ba duan jin or "8 Silk Brocades" is a set of eight exercises, each of which is repeated 8 times, that is designed to loosen the body in preparation for other exercise. It also encourages one's energy to flow throughout the body.
