Welcome to Pilates East Anglia
What is Pilates?
A gentle, yet powerful exercise system.
This form of exercise is not new. Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. Joseph didn’t enjoy the best of health, and this showed him the importance of physical fitness and enabled him to strengthen his body. He started to develop a system of exercises to keep his body strong and supple. As a German working in England (he taught self defence to British Detectives), he was interned at the outbreak of war in 1914. During this period he used his exercise system to keep himself and others fit and healthy.
After the war he returned to Germany, and carried on teaching these exercises working with top dancers. Over the years his exercise system and reputation grew. Pilates emigrated to America, here he built a huge clientele of elite dancers, helping to strengthen mind and body to enhance their performance.
Pilates in the 21st Century or Modified Pilates
The original works of Pilates have been broken down to enable those of us that are not elite athletes to reap the benefits from this system. The Pilates method of exercise has evolved over the last few years with the greater understanding of body mechanics and research that has been undertaken. It can work for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level and can benefit those with back and postural problems. The Pilates exercise system offers unrivalled integration of mind and body.
