NEURO LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING (NLP)

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is the study of self communication. How we communicate with ourselves through our beliefs, values and expectations will greatly influence our outcomes. The meaning of the communication is the response you get. It is the ability to change the process by which we experience reality. The resources an individual needs to effect a change are already within themselves. It is recognising there is a positive intention motivating every behaviour. NLP studies how we structure our subjective experience - how we think about our values and beliefs and how we create our emotional states and then how we construct our internal world from our experiences and give it meaning.

The name NLP was coined by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. Their work evolved from their study of expert communicators such as Milton Erickson, Virginia Satire and Fritz Perls. What Bandler and Grinder discovered through a method they called "modelling" was that if any person could achieve a result, then other people could be taught to do the same thing, by following the same basic actions, including thought patterns of the person they were modelling. NLP is the method for modelling excellence so it can be duplicated.

The term Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) comes from the three areas it brings together
N NEUROLOGY The mind and how we think

L LINGUISTICS How we use language and how it affects us

P PROGRAMMING How we sequence our actions to achieve our goals.

The NLP practitioners goal is to change a person’s state and re-programme that person’s beliefs about themselves. the NLP practitioner attempts to discern how a client perceives and relates to identity, personal beliefs, and life goal issues. NLP can help people to replace false or negative perceptions, with positive, life affirming beliefs

MEDITATION

Interested in Meditation? Struggling to quiet down your mind whilst meditating, Want to learn how to meditate and enjoy the benefits of relaxation, self healing, enlightenment, experiencing the here and now, getting to know your true self, understanding form and emptiness, then contact Julie for one to one lessons or group lessons using guided meditation, contemplation, and mantra meditation and the practice of Mindfulness.

What is Mindfulness - Mindfulness was described as the Buddha as having four foundations
  1. an awareness of our body's movements (mindfulness of the body)

  2. an awareness of our physical sensations (mindfulness of the feelings)

  3. an awareness of our moods and emotions (mindfulness of the mental state)

  4. an awareness of our thoughts (mindfulness of mental objects).
How can we achieve mindfulness, well be can achieve this by focusing fully upon the present moment without being lost in thoughts about the past or future and in associated fantasies and anxieties. To be mentally absorbed in anything but the present is to be centred not in reality but in ideas about reality.

STRESS RELATED ISSUES - Personal or work related

Research in the study of psyconeuroimmunology has proved that chronic stress causes alterations to the immune system causing illness.

Research has indicated that an inextricable chemical link exists between our emotions, which includes all stress in our lives, both good and bad, and the regulatory systems of the endocrine and immune systems through the central nervous system. This research emphasises the importance of expressing our emotions both verbally and physically in an appropriate way. When strong emotions generate fear, anger or rage and these are not expressed in a healthy way then the body's natural response is that of the sympathetic nervous system as demonstrated in Cannon's research on homeostasis and the fight or flight syndrome. At this point, inappropriate storing of these stressful emotions produces an excess of epinephrine. This excess of epinephrine causes a chemical breakdown, resulting in internal weakening of the immune system and an increased potential for disease.

POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

PTSD can develop following involvement in a critical incident such as a life-threatening assault or traffic accident. PTSD can also develop among people who witnessed these events.. During the traumatic incident people can feel intense fear, helplessness, horror and a sense of being overwhelmed and unable to cope. It is difficult to predict who will develop PTSD after such an incident, and not everyone will do so. In some people PTSD develops soon after the trauma. It is not unusual, however, to see a delayed onset of symptoms, sometimes months or even years after the initial trauma.

The strict definition of PTSD is that the trauma you had or witnessed must be serious. Examples of this are - a severe accident, rape, a life-threatening assault, torture, seeing someone killed or a natural disaster such as a strong earthquake. However, symptoms similar to PTSD can develop in some people after less severe events. What they all have in common, however, is that the problematic symptoms begin with the incident.

So who can suffer from it?

Certain groups of people are more prone to PTSD than others:
Emergency services, especially rescue workers such as fire fighters, police, ambulance
    Survivors of road traffic accidents
    Rape victims
    Terrorism survivors
    Military personnel involved in combat
Symptoms fall into three broad groups:- INTRUSIVE, AVOIDANT and PHYSICAL
Intrusive:- Recurrent and disturbing recollections, flashbacks, thoughts, nightmares, dreams, phobias about specific daily routines, events or objects, feelings of guilt for having survived.

Avoidant:- Detachment from others, emotional numbness, avoidance of thoughts or feelings associated with the event, markedly diminished interest or pleasure in most activities

Physical:- Sleep problems, hypervigilance, Exaggerated startle response, Joint/muscle pains, Feelings of nervousnesss.
Other groups include SOCIAL - Violent outbursts, Increased irritability, Impaired memory, Inability to concentrate, Irrational or impulsive behaviour and low self esteem. TIME - Depression/anxiety develop.

Recurring and intrusive thoughts and memories surrounding the incident. Flashbacks can happen and these can be distressing

Avoidance: this is when people try to avoid anything that reminds them of the incident. This includes thoughts, conversations, associated places, people, activities or anything which may trigger memories of the trauma. A common trigger is reports in the media, especially at anniversaries of incidents
A feeling of emotional numbness and feeling isolation from others. Some people report that nothing feels real anymore. Relationships with those close to you may suffer

You may lose interest in previously enjoyable activities and only be able to look on the dark side of life
Hypersensitivity - This includes Irritability and bouts of temper

Post traumatic stress disorder is generally defined as a condition where the sufferer experiences recurring distressing and intrusive memories and other symptoms after involvement in a traumatic event.

The important thing to remember about PTSD is that it is a normal reaction to an abnormal event which is outside the range of normal human experience. The event only has to be preceived to be traumatic to the victim

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms can include the following:
Being constantly on guard and aware of every danger
Exaggerated startle response, jumping at every little thing
Problems sleeping or staying asleep, awakening very early and unable to return to sleep
Difficulty concentrating and short term memory problems.
All of the above are normal reactions to an abnormal event and are easily understood in relation to the fight or flight response.. In most cases, PTSD resolves itself in about 6 months. In some cases the symptoms of PTSD persist long-term. Modern research now means that trauma specialists have effective techniques they can use to help people.

There is no need to wait and see if your symptoms are going to persist beyond 6 months. You can seek help immediately after a traumatic incident

What about treatment?

The aim of treatment is not to wipe away the memories. What happened has happened and that cannot be changed. The aim is to desensitise the memory so it no longer causes you distress.

The following treatment options have been shown to be effective for those already suffering from PTSD:
    Hypnotherapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
    The Rewind Technique
    Anxiety management
    Relaxation training
    CBT Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
    Psychotherapy
    Relaxation
    Drugs prescribed by doctor

What is Critical Incident De-briefing?

Critical Incident Debriefing is a psychological intervention implemented after a major incident such as war zone trauma, civilian disaster, terrorist incident or natural disaster, sudden death

The aim of Critical Incident Debriefing CID is to prevent or limit the onset of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other stress related problems. Ideally, this intervention will take place within 72 hrs after the incident but can be still be beneficial many years after the event.

Debriefing was originally developed for the benefit of emergency services and military personnel but is now available to benefit the general population where they are exposed to a traumatic incident.

Working with emotionally traumatised individuals, or those who have been exposed to a traumatic event, is a highly specialised area and debriefers need to be properly trained and experienced in trauma related issues and PTSD. The aim of Critical Incident Debriefing is to minimise unnecessary psychological distress or responses in the aftermath of a traumatic event. Additional support in the form of follow up counselling or support may be required afterwards. This may be done by your debriefer if they have the necessary skills, or by way of referral to a suitable professional service.

How to seek Help:-

The first step for most people is a confidential, no obligation chat on the telephone. Here we will discuss your individual situation and decide between us what course of action can be taken.

The number of sessions required will vary depending on what is being treated. For example, stopping smoking may be done in one session of around one and a half hours, weight loss may require two or three one hour sessions, where more deep rooted problems may require five or six sessions.

If you have any questions about any of the treatments listed here and would like to discuss personally with Julie then please contact by phone or e-mail and we will discuss jointly the best way forward.
