SERVICES

Welcome to Northampton College

It's your tomorrow

Northampton College has become one of the larger general Further Education Colleges in the region, with approximately 13,000 learners, a turnover of almost £28 million and over 600 full time members of staff and around 400 ‘visiting lecturers’. It offers a broad range of full-time and part-time Learning and Skills Council (LSC) funded courses. In addition, it provides Higher Education courses funded through The University of Northampton; and support for other organisations including the voluntary sector. It also has its own subsidiary, Powerdriver UK, funded under the 1998 Skills Challenge to establish a training centre for the logistics and distribution industries.

Northampton College’s mission is to provide our community with the opportunity to develop through learning.

We are committed to serving our learners by:
  • Identifying and focusing on key strands of provision
  • Providing the highest quality learning experiences
  • Employing new technologies to underpin learning
  • Working closely with employers and others to meet the needs of the economy
  • Working in the local community to widen participation in learning
  • Promoting partnerships that deliver responsive and coherent learning provision
The College has been successful in securing approval, in principle, from the Learning & Skills Council to transform the College's two sites in Northampton, at a cost of over £70 million.

The transformation will provide a pivotal contribution in helping to deliver the strategic economic growth and regeneration ambitions for the town. It will provide a modern, fit for purpose, learning environment for the local community that will help maximise participation and achievement and contribute to the necessary skills development in the town and Northamptonshire.

The College's largest site at Booth Lane has been expanding ad hoc since the 1970s as its popularity and demand for its services has grown. Even with the purchase of Boothville Middle School in 2004, the College has outgrown its present accommodation. Many of the buildings are dated and not fit for purpose.

The College wishes to complement the schools re-build programme led by Northamptonshire County Council by creating an equally attractive educational environment for post-16 learners. It is proposed to demolish all 21,000m of existing buildings and replace them with a new building of 27,000m providing a high quality, modern design fit to educate and skill the County's students in the 21st century. Planning and development is now underway and it is anticipated that work will begin in January 2009 with the new building ready for use in 2011/12.

The College’s other site in Northampton is situated on the corner of Lower Mounts and St Michael's Road in the town centre. This building provides a central location for the College’s adult education programmes and enables the College to meet the needs of current and future learners and create widening participation amongst the various community groups. In addition, the building houses the University of Leicester’s Institute of Lifelong Learning and representation from the University of Northampton.

The development proposal for Lower Mounts comprises an additional building of 3000 square metres. It is planned that the College will relocate its Hair & Beauty salon and create an attractive haute cuisine training restaurant facility. Construction work will begin in January 2009 and will be completed and open for business in March 2010.

In addition, the College has a substantial site in Daventry including a dedicated Sixth Form Centre from which it delivers a range of full time and part time provision. Working in conjunction with its partners in the Daventry Learning Partnership (DLP); Danetre and William Parker Schools, and Moulton College, it provides for the educational and training needs of post-16 learners in Daventry and makes a significant contribution to the 14-16 curriculum in the schools.

Major plans for Daventry are being put together with Daventry District Council and the four partners of the DLP to design and build an iconic and modern new building for Daventry which will house all post-16 education in the area of town known as ‘The Learning Quarter’, close to the town centre. It is planned that the new building will be launched in 2011.

The College works closely with other FE and HE providers in the County including Moulton College, The University of Northampton and Tresham Institute.Partnerships have been established with the Council for Ethnic Minority Communities, the Chamber and other bodies to provide targeted initiatives for local needs.

Northampton College’s locally-delivered LSC funded provision supports almost 4,000 full-time students, most of whom are aged 16-19, in programmes covering most curriculum areas. It has also extended its link provision with schools and the LEA. Around 600 students of compulsory school age have participated in College provision this year, and the development of the 14-16 curriculum will offer further opportunities for collaboration. The College delivers part or all of a number of Higher Education programmes validated by the University of Northampton.

The College Principal is Len Closs, who leads a team of Vice Principals and Director of Finance responsible for managing the business areas of the College and developing, delivering and managing the curriculum and students. The curriculum is managed within the Directorate of Learning, through three faculties. The faculties are Arts, Media & the Humanities; Business, Innovation & Service Skills, and Technology & Enterprise.

The College has been re-affirmed as meeting Investors in People standards four times since 1995 and has also achieved the Recruitment and Selection IiP award. As a result there is an active programme of staff and continued professional development, which includes the provision of the Certificate in Education validated by The University of Northampton. The College is committed to the support and development of a professionally qualified and experienced workforce. The College has committed to Investors in Diversity as an objective measure of the centrality of equality and diversity in all we do.

The College serves Northampton, Daventry, the South and West of Northamptonshire and nearby towns and villages. Service, retail, distribution and logistics industries are strongly represented in the area. It has a manufacturing base which, though diminishing, is higher than the national average. There is a high percentage of small businesses. Although unemployment in Northampton is low, there are significant areas of deprivation in the town’s Eastern District, which is immediately adjacent to the College’s site at Booth Lane, as well as in some central and north-western wards. There are also issues relating to the rural areas of the county which the College serves.

The College contracts with the LSC to provide Apprenticeship training. It also provides workplace learning through the government-funded Train to Gain service for employers. In addition, the College seeks alternative funding from such sources as ESF and Northamptonshire Enterprise Ltd (EMDA) to deliver a broader range of learning opportunities.
