Hypnotherapy
Hypnosis is often mis-represented in books, films and on television to make the action or the story seem more exciting.
In reality, Hypnosis is a relaxing and pleasant experience that leaves you feeling refreshed and invigorated. It's an altered state of consciousness where your brainwaves slow down to a more rythmic pattern called Alpha. But don't worry, you pass through this pleasant alpha state at least once a day, in the last few minutes before you fall asleep and the first few minutes after you wake.
When your hypnotherapist helps you achieve this relaxed day dream like state the unconscious part of your mind is more open to helpful suggestions and the critical conscious part that runs your everday life is less likely to get in the way.
One of the interesting things about hypnosis is that in by-passing this critical filter in your conscious mind you can overwrite faulty programming and un-helpful habits. That's why many smokers are able to stop so easily with hypnosis. Because they truly believe that they don't smoke, they don't experience cravings or withdrawal symptons in the same way as other people who try to quit.
What to Expect.
Going to see a Hypnotherapist for the first time can often be quite daunting. We appreciate that you may feel apprehensive, that's why our goal is to give you as much information as possible and explain everything in advance.
Your First Visit
Like many Hypnotherapists, I run a private practice from home. It's quiet, accessible and has plenty of parking. On your first visit you'll be asked to fill out a New Patient form. It's not intrusive, it's just to ascertain a picture of your general health and well being.
The first visit will usually last around 30 minutes and is free. This is an opportunity for you to discuss the reasons for your visit and for me to answer any questions you may have. You won't be hypnotised during the initial consultation, but the issue you arrived with will be discussed and explained as well as a treatment programme and the number of sessions you might need ... if hypnotherapy is the appropriate course of action for you.
Subsequent Visits.
On your second and subsequent visits, a more in depth case history will be taken and the session will include an element of hypnosis. Every clients needs are different and as such, each session will be tailored to your individual needs.
I usually work in blocks of three appointments,but you should notice changes after the first session. Hypnotherapy is a brief therapy, so two or three sessions are often all that is needed.
Qualifications
I am a qualified, registered Clinical Hypnotherapist practising in Plymouth and the surrounding area. I trained at the South West School of Clinical Hypnotherapy and am qualified to both Certificate and Diploma level.
I am a member of the South East Cornwall Hypnotherapist Continuing Professional Development Group where I am the CPD officer.
