Chinese Medicine

Chinese Medicine is an ancient method of healing that originated in the Far East several thousand years ago. This medical system treats the whole body as an entirety and can therefore improve emotional and psychological problems in addition to physical ones. As a result, patient often notice an increase in energy and overall sense of wellbeing from treatment.

Chinese Medical practitioners diagnose and treat according to energetic imbalances within the body and therefore treat the root cause of the problem rather than just the symptom itself. As treatment aims to re-establish an individual’s energetic imbalances and consequently help the body to heal itself, patients frequently benefit from an improvement in other areas of their health.

Many patients chose to continue treatment after their original main complaint has improved in order to optimise their health.

Acupuncture

This aspect of Chinese Medicine comprises the insertion of very fine, sterile, disposable needles into specific acupuncture points on the body.

Acupuncture involves improving the flow of energy through channels in the body, each of which are linked to specific organs. Blockages or poor flow of energy in these channels results in internal imbalance and ill health. The acupuncture needles stimulate the improved flow of energy and allow the body to rectify the imbalance.

Diagnosis

The diagnostic process for acupuncture is detailed and thorough, as this is the key to successful treatment and improvement in symptoms. The practitioner will study the pulse and tongue as they are trained to recognise the signs of illness and imbalance that manifest there.

Diagnosis also involves the practitioner taking a case history of the patient in the initial treatment. This gives the practitioner insight as to how an individual’s body is functioning along with details of the illness/es and medical history allowing the practitioner to treat an individual’s specific needs.

Does it hurt?

Many people coming for acupuncture for the first time are understandably concerned about whether it causes pain. However, the needles are extremely fine and therefore there is only a slight dull ache or tingling sensation usually felt (which is completely normal). Most people are pleasantly surprised by the lack of pain and how small the needles are!
