SERVICES
I am an experienced practitioner, qualifying as a homeopath 20 years ago, adding the Bowen Technique to my skills in 1999 and becoming a BWY yoga teacher in 2008 and have been practicing yoga for nearlly 30 years. I have just moved to Buxton in the High Peaks after having a successful practice in Kent based around Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells. I am able to offer yoga/mindfulness classes and Bowen Technique in Buxton, Ashbourne, Chapel en le Frith, Leek and New Mills. I also like to offer these classes to charities supporting mental health, carers and young offenders, and work within schools teaching mindfulness.
I have always had an interest in health and wellbeing, probably influenced by the fact that my mother suffered from MS and I have had asthma since I was 7 yrs old. My interest in complementary medicine started when I found that the doctors only had one option to treat my asthma, which was steroids and inhalers. The fact that altering my diet, using exercise and relaxation techniques would help my symptoms was of little interest to my doctors. As it was likely that I would have asthma for the rest of my life I looked into other ways of treating it. Since I discovered yoga I have not been in hospital due to asthma, and I have had periods where I have not needed my inhalor at all. I actually use all of my practices to help my asthmatic symptoms, Bowen Technique, Mindfulness and Yoga Therapy.
In the past I have worked with mental health charities, where I have gained experience relating to people in emotional crisis.I have also worked with young carers and adult carers for the last 9 years, offering 121 support, advice and information plus support groups. I ran yoga classes twice a week for adult carers which were very well attended plus yoga classes and Mindfulness workshops for young carers.
Yoga
at New Mills Golf Club Apple Tree Rd
Yoga means the union of body, mind and spirit.
Yoga makes us feel confident within ourselves, more able to cope with life's ups and downs and more able to listen to our inner guidance. Our physical health is improved as the body will gradually build strength, tone and suppleness.
Asana
The yoga positions termed asanas help us to tone, stretch, develop flexibility and build up strength in our bodies. By concentrating on the posture the mind becomes quiet, the breath becomes slow and self-awareness is developed. Yoga is non-competitive, and is suitable for all. If you are suffering any pain or health conditions please let me know, alternative postures and modifications can be used to help, each student can benefit from the practice.
Within my classes I will bring attention to the breath, to chakras, chanting, and wonderful flowing salutations often practiced with yogic music. Please have a read at what my students have to say about my classes.
Yogic Breath
Yogic breathing techniques slow the activity of the mind, as slow smooth breathing makes the mind calm. It is both relaxing and revitalizing to the whole body and reduces stress. You will be taught various breathing techniques, and after gaining more control of the breath we will move onto pranayama and more advanced work. The use of these techniques can have a deep positive effect on health.
Relaxation
Specific techniques will be taught to totally relax the body and mind, allowing the body to absorb the work that has taken place. Relaxation also brings about a feeling of wellbeing and contentment that can be taken into our daily lives. Yoga Nidra will be a regular practice, which brings an intense feeling of stillness to the mind and body and is very healing. Yoga Philosophy will be touched on within the lessons, helping to highlight the link between mind, breath and body, and to develop awareness of the self and inner guidance.
Yoga Therapy
I have used yoga to heal my own health issues (including sciatica and asthma) and I have used the therapeutic aspect of yoga in my yoga classes for many years, so I have always regarded yoga as a therapeutic tool. In Feb 2015 I attended a Yoga Therapy course in India gaining a Distinction First Class Diploma in Yoga Therapy from the Yoga Vidya Gurukul Institute in Nashik. This diploma is Government of Maharashtra recognised. I have also attended Yoga Therapy training here in the UK with The Yoga Healing Foundation. This has prepared me to treat clients with many conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, sciatica, asthma stress/ anxiety and multiple sclerosis.
Yoga therapy makes use of the asana, including chair yoga, pranayama, cleansing techniques, meditation and relaxation. Simple natropathic techniques will be taught plus information on diet and lifestyle. Whatever your state of health you will be able to gain some relief from practicing these techniques.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is defined by 'being in the present moment', by practicing mindfulness one is able to become calm, become more able to gain awareness and acceptance of one's feelings, thoughts and bodily sensations, and let go of unhealthy patterns of stress. By practicing mindfulness one can improve one's mental health, worries are decreased and happiness is more readily accessible.
I have been running mindfulness workshops within schools and workshops for teenagers and adults for over 3 years, plus working 121 with clients. In the workshops we look at the habits of the mind, the persistant thoughts of the past or future which bring a feeling of anxiety, low mood or agitation to the mind. Techniques are taught to help bring the mind to the present, away from the distractions and worries that can hound our daily lives. Various techniques are taught and ways that they can be incorporated into daily living.
Working 1-2-1 with a client I use different techniques and practices to help each individual, helping them to recognise their own habits and to gain acceptance and compassion for themselves. In a short time many benefits are noticed, making the practice more easy to stick to.
I am able to offer workshops to schools, groups and 1-2-1 sessions in Buxton and the surrounding High Peaks towns. Please contact me for more information.
Bowen Technique
at Whaley Bridge, the Riverside Wellbeing Centre SK23 7AA
The Bowen Technique encourages the body to heal and align itself. The work consists of a series of moves gently rolling connective tissue, using a light-touch, and it is usually done through clothing (no jeans though please). There are frequent important pauses between these moves, where the practitioner leaves the room. This enables the body adjust.
How does it work?
The Bowen Technique balances and stimulates energy flows, resulting in a deep sense of overall relaxation. The restorative process begins once the body is relaxed, and continues throughout the treatment. The theory is that healing seems to occur by affecting the body's autonomic nervous system, which creates homeostasis at the cellular level.
Ask anyone who has had the Bowen Technique and they will all say that it is unusual but very effective. It feels as if the practitioner does very little, but it is surprisingly deep. Often patients feel heat or tingling during the treatment, and it is possible that they feel light headed when they sit up at the end.
What can it treat?
I use it to treat any kind of back problem, sciatica, lower back pain, neck and shoulder pain. It is also brilliant for frozen shoulder, tennis elbow and carple tunnel syndrome. It is also great for knee and ankle complaints.
I have had amazing affects with asthma and coughs, especially with children, and good affects with fertility problems and period pains. Migraines, sinus problems and hay-fever react well to the treatment too.
How many treatments?
Usually three treatments will bring about a good recovery, more may be needed for general check-ups. It is important that the first two treatments are one week apart, and that the patient does not do vigorous exercise shortly after the sessions. It is also important that the patient drinks plenty of water between the treatments.
As with many therapies that stimulate the bodies healing power it is possible that the patient’s symptoms worsen for a couple of days after the first treatment. Drinking water and walking can help alleviate this.
Training
I studied with the European College of Bowen Studies and became an Accredited Practitioner of The Bowen Technique in 1999.
Why did I start to study Bowen Technique?
I had been suffering from sciatica for two years and had been spending a fortune at the Osteopath and I was feeling depressed about the lack of improvement. At a Health Show where I was advertising my Homeopathic practice two ladies were advertising the Bowen Technique and gave me a mini treatment. I contacted them the next day as I was amazed by the effect. I had three treatments and was free from pain. I had to return for treatments after my two pregnancies, and a few years ago when my back became bad and each time the Bowen Technique has put me on the course of recovery.
How much does it cost?
Adults 1 hr treatment £35
Children 1/2 treatment £20
As you can see it is much more reasonable than Osteopathic treatment, it doesn’t hurt, and it not only brings about recovery, it also makes you feel relaxed. I love it!
