SERVICES
Welcome to Northern Ireland Centre for Trauma Transformation
The Centre was set up by a charitable trust in 2002, and is based in Omagh, Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Our principal aims are to provide training and support developments in relation to cognitive therapy and psychological trauma related disorders. Please see our training page for more details.
We provide a trauma focused cognitive therapy treatment programme for people suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and related conditions. Subject to capacity this service is available to people affected by incidents linked to the Northern Ireland conflict (The Troubles) and other (non-Troubles) traumatic experiences. Please see our treatment programme page for more information.
We also undertake research, policy development (including disaster mental health planning) and, where possible, provide support to NGOs in other countries through our humanitarian relief programme where there is a need for training in relation to psychological trauma.
The centre was initially funded by Northern Ireland Office to April 2006 and is now mainly funded by the Department of Health & Social Services Public Safety Northern Ireland (DHSSPSNI).
What should you expect if you are referred to the centre?
When a person first makes contact
When a person makes contact with the Centre and enquires about receiving treatment for trauma, in the first instance some details will be taken about the person and their traumatic experience, and how they have been affected. Based on this information, the person can be:
- Provided with advice and guidance, or
- Assisted in making contact with another service, or
- Be invited to meet with one of the therapists for a more detailed assessment
When a person has an assessment with a therapist, again there can be a number of outcomes. These include the person being:
- Provided with advice and guidance, or
- Assisted in making contact with another service, or
- Undertaking treatment with the Centre.
How is therapy provided?
When a person is offered the treatment programme, they will be assigned a therapist working at the Centre. They will be offered dates for attending for therapy, which we will endeavour to arrange at times most suitable to the person concerned. The Centre's therapy programme is normally provided during office hours, Monday to Friday. Generally speaking therapy takes about 12 sessions; sometimes more, sometimes less. After therapy has been completed, some follow up sessions might be agreed between the therapist and the patient.
Maximising the benefits of therapy
We would encourage each person attending for therapy to attend for all appointments on the agreed dates, so that the benefits of therapy can be maximised, as soon as possible. Also, occasionally the therapist and the patient will agree on work or activities in between therapy sessions. Again, the benefits of therapy can be maximised if this work or activities are undertaken as planned.
Participating in the Centre's Research Programme
We are both a treatment and research Centre. Through our research we are able to learn more about the impact of traumatic experiences and to continually refine our treatment approach, from which patients continually benefit. We also cooperate and liase with other trauma centres and clinicians in Northern Ireland and elsewhere in various parts of the world to continually improve our treatment approach. All members of the public, who have assessments or treatment with the Centre, will be asked if they would be willing to participate in the Centre's research programme.
Other matters relating to the treatment programme
The Centre's Troubles related treatment programme is restricted to the treatment of 50 persons per year. However, through our support for others working in this area, and our training & education programme, we are able to support the efforts of others who are addressing the impact of the Troubles. Where appropriate and with the consent of each patient, we will also liase with other Centres and organisations involved in providing similar services to ensure that members of the public are assisted in making contact with the most appropriate service relevant to their needs at that time.
If you have any further questions about the work or approach of the Centre and its staff, or indeed any comments or suggestions, which might help us, improve our services, please speak to a member of staff at the Centre, or write to the Director or email us on info@nictt.org.
