About Sheila
Sheila Whittaker, GRSM, ARCM, MCSH, MCMA, is a classically trained professional violinist & musician – she studied at the Royal College of Music in London & graduated with a GRSM degree & ARCM violin teaching diploma. For nearly twenty years she had a thriving career in the mainstream classical music world, freelancing with many orchestras & chamber groups including the Royal Ballet & the Castalian Duo, & running a teaching practise alongside her performing work.
Some years ago Sheila reached a turning point in her career after attending a talk on Sound Healing, & realised it was time to use her musical abilities in a different way for more direct healing purposes. Various “coincidences” & synchronicities led her to study with Simon Heather, principal of the College of Sound Healing, with whom she completed her basic Sound Healing training. At this time she was also drawn to learn Reiki & completed her traditional Reiki Master training in 2004 with Hjalmar Jonsson, one of the founder members of the Reiki Association.
Further synchronicities led to Sheila’s meeting with world-renowned Gongmaster Don Conreaux, discovering the Gong & its’ awesome healing power. Sheila studied with Don & continues to work with him; she also works with Aidan McIntyre, singing bowl master & Don’s musical assistant. Sheila has specialised in the use of the Gong for Sound Therapy. Other ancient & unusual healing instruments including master quality old Himalayan singing bowls, bells, tuning forks, violin & overtoning are also utilised for her sound therapy sessions & performances. Sheila has recorded three Gong CD’s – “Transcendence – a Cosmic ocean of Sound”, “Quantum Transformations – a Journey into Timelessness” (a collaboration with Aidan McIntyre), & “Sounds of Stillness – A Journey into the Third Ear”.
Sheila is a member of the UK Sound Healers Association & the Complimentary Medical Association. She is a tutor for the College of Sound Healing, & was for two years Chairperson for the College. She teaches the “Sound Healing with Gongs” & “Chant & Mantra” workshop modules for the College Sound Healing training. Sheila also gives workshops & private lessons in Gong, harmonium & other aspects of Sound Healing when required. As a traditional Reiki Master/teacher, she runs Reiki courses & a private therapy practise.
Sheila leads the Jayadeva Chanting ensemble with tabla player Gavin Bates & singer Helen Reynolds. She holds a twice-monthly Gongbath session on Thursday evenings in the Brighton area. She is a member of Brighton-based East/West fusion band IndigoEye playing violin, Gongs, harmonium, & vocals.
