What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the main components of Traditional Chinese Medicine; a complete medical system able to treat disease in its many forms. Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years and its effectiveness has allowed it to grow into one of the most popular and widely used systems of healing throughout the world today.
Chinese medicine regards each and every aspect of a person as a set of interrelated and interdependent functions - the physical mechanisms, the thoughts and intellectual faculties, the emotional aspects, as well as the more subtle aspects, sometimes referred to as spirit. Wherever signs of illness manifest, Chinese medicine treats the root cause by restoring the balance and harmony of the whole system, through the application of pressure and/or insertion of fine needles. It is a highly effective treatment for a range of conditions. However, because of its holistic approach, many people who have acupuncture experience overall improvement to their general health and a greater sense of well-being. For that reason, some people continue to have periodic treatment after the original problem has gone, in order to maintain their health and enable them to be more effective in coping with life's changes and/or the impact of daily stresses and strains.
Treatment
Acupuncture promotes natural healing by the insertion of fine needles into specific acupuncture points located along energy pathways, called meridians. These points access the body's natural energy flow known as Qi. Only disposable needles are used for the purpose of treatment.
There may sometimes be a mild and momentary sensation when a needle is inserted. It is not however a painful process and indeed many people find the treatment itself very relaxing. The initial treatment begins with a consultation and generally takes between an hour and an hour-and-a-half. Subsequent treatments take about 45 minutes.
Some people may feel significant improvements after the first treatment, however, the severity of the complaint, how long it has been present and a person's general health are all factors in how many treatments will be needed to restore health.
