SERVICES The aim at Yorkshire Yoga is to provide yoga classes not only for all ages -- from antenatal to the aged, but also for all abilities -- from the most able to those dis-abled by chronic disease. To find out more information about group classes, please click on 'type' of yoga below!
- Hot Yoga
A series of 26 demanding postures practised in a hot room. Each posture stretches and strengthens specific muscles, ligaments and joints, stimulating the organs, glands and nerves. On a physical level, you can change the body’s shape, develop muscle tone and lose inches. On a mental level, you can improve concentration, patience and self-control, hopefully leading to mental clarity and relief from stress! Beginners classes are suited for all levels of ability. Drink lots of water before you arrive, bring a towel and a bottle of water.
- Ashtanga Vinyasa
A challenging series that dynamically flows from one posture to the next, linked together by the breath-movement synchronisation of vinyasa. This is an aerobic workout that increases upper body strength and flexibilty in a short period of time. Modifications will be offered to ensure the proper alignment and safety of a posture. It is sometimes known as 'power yoga' and it achieved great popularity after celebrities Madonna and Sting publicised the benefits. Practised at normal room temperature, but you get sizzling hot.
- Yoga for Weight Loss Pilot
The holistic weight loss pilot was developed for a qualitative research study conducted by Leeds Univeristy. Both a yoga group and a control group (that did not receive the yoga class) were on the same healthy diet and weekly weight monitoring. At the end of the study the control group had lost 57 pounds compared to 210 lbs lost by the Yoga Group. Healthy eating, gentle yoga, core stability exercise, relaxation and affirmation.
- Pregnancy Yoga
Yoga for Pregnancy are sessions specifically addressing mums-to-be. Stretching whilst strengthening helps to release the pelvic opening in preparation for childbirth. Toning the pelvic floor allows for a more controlled birthing, lessens complications and enhances postnatal recovery. Breath work and relaxation techniques are practised in preparation for labour. Flexibility and calm ease the birthing process, thus reducing pain and increasing the joy of giving birth. BWY teacher has ompleted advanced training with the Wheel's Yoga for Pregnancy course. The class is usually packed to maximum with people who have booked up to their due date.
- General Hatha Yoga
Hatha Yoga is the best known and most widely practised yoga in the West. It is for all ages and all abilities. This is the course to choose if you are looking for balance and harmony in your life -- asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing) and pratyahara (withdrawal from the senses through relaxation) nurture body, mind and spirit. Our Hatha Yoga teachers are fully qualified with the British Wheel of Yoga, the governing body for yoga.
- Pilates
Core Yoga is the fusion of Yoga and Pilates blending the best of both disciplines into a cohesive practice. This is gentle yoga practice with emphasis on postural alignment and core stability, particularly beneficial for those suffering from back or neck problems. It is also highly recommended for the 'gentle years' or for those who are in recovery after surgery or childbirth. The teacher is qualified as a yoga teacher with the British Wheel of Yoga and is also a Modern Pilates instructor

- Children & Teens Yoga
For baby yogis who have started crawling and toddling. It is designed to stimulate the mental, physical and emotional faculties of your child with the added benefit of enriching the parent and child relationship. It is ‘partner yoga’ with fun activities and songs to aid in the development of concentration skills. Sessions encourage pre-verbal communication and enhance physical confidence.
- Baby Yoga
Baby Yoga (3-9 mos) is designed for babies and parents to do in partnership with each other. It encourages pre-verbal communication and enhances baby's physical confidence. Yoga exercises are intertwined with songs and fun activities. New mums will be able to work on postnatal exercises and if baby's partner is a dad or grandparent, he/she will also benefit from the gentle yoga practice. It teaches carer and baby how to relax together! Stay for the Bring & Share lunch afterwards so that we have a chance to chat! The teacher holds diplomas from the British Wheel of Yoga and Birthlight.
- "Able & Enabled" Yoga
Sessions are free to wheelchair-users and their carers. Wheelchair users will be gently lifted from their chairs with our new mobile hoist so that they can perform modified versions of yoga postures on yoga mats. “The hoist is a wonderful piece of equipment, and now I'm not dubious of it any more! To be able to get on the floor and stretch, with help, was a great sensation. The building is fully accessible, and has a disabled toilet. The teachers are very helpful, positive and full of encouragement.” -- Julia Ellison
About Laura Bissell - Founding Director, BWY DCT
Laura has been practising Yoga for over 30 years, firstly in America and since 1988 in Britain. During the Yoga for Health Foundation’s Teacher Training course at Ickwell Bury in 1994/95, Laura was impressed by the real commitment there to offer ‘yoga for all’ and the seed was planted to open a regional centre in the north for the whole community. Laura refined her teaching skills with the British Wheel of Yoga's 3-year diploma course; she is now a BWY Teacher Training Diploma Course Tutor. Laura has completed 3 BWY advanced post-diploma modules: 1) Pranayama based on the system of Swami Gitananda, 2) Yoga for Pregnancy and 3) Ayurveda. She is a Remedial Yoga Therapist, having done advanced training for physical disabilities at the Yoga for Health Foundation, plus YOU & ME training with its emphasis on learning disabilities. Further 'specialty' training has been completed: Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga from Union Yoga, Baby Yoga & Massage from Francoise Freedman's Birthlight programme and Modern Pilates, a course developed by Physiotherapist Christopher Norris, author of "Back Stability" and "Abdominal Training, Enhancing Core Stability". Laura has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas and is a qualified secondary school teacher in England.
