I have been treating patients for over 25 years. Leaving college after A levels, I trained in Plymouth to become a Staff Nurse working on a busy acute trauma ward, dealing with broken bones and joints, usually after road traffic accidents, falls or sporting injuries.

OSTEOPATHY

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a system of treatments that are designed to help reduce pain anywhere in the body and help improve the health of your mind, body and spirit. Osteopaths focus on the bodys skeleton and joint function and the underlying muscle groups, soft tissues and internal organs.

Osteopaths usually start any treatment by releasing and relaxing muscle and stretching stiff joints, using gentle massage techniques, rhythmic joint movements and muscle release techniques. The Osteopath may also carry out manipulation using short, quick movements to spinal joints.

Using gentle stretching and mobilising techniques, as well as manipulation of joints, treatment usually consists of a combination of soft tissue releases, some specific adjustments affecting joints and self help exercise and stretching.

Treatments

On your first visit, a full medical case history is taken, and a physical examination will be carried out. During the examination a few simple movements will be performed allowing the Osteopath to assess the problem. You can then explain where the pain is and when it comes on; you will not be asked to do more than you can manage.

The Osteopath will feel areas of tenderness, weakness or restriction and will make a diagnosis. This will be explained and if Osteopathic treatment is suitable will be offered to you, if not appropriate then the Osteopath will advise you on what to do next; ie visiting another therapist, or having an investigation.

Osteopaths usually start any treatment by releasing and relaxing muscles and stretching stiff joints using gentle massage techniques, rhythmic joint movements and muscle release techniques. The Osteopath may also carry out manipulation using short, quick movements to spinal joints.

Treatment usually last about half an hour and normally between 2 and 6 sessions are required. Some people like to have periodic maintenance treatments, which can be discussed with the Osteopath.
