About Craniosacral Therapy
We heal ourselves. In Craniosacral therapy (CST), we call this active, intelligent drive to health: The Breath of Life, which manifests in the living organism as a regular, tidal movement of fluids throughout the whole body. In CST training, therapists develop the ability to feel this tidal flow by means of light touch, getting a sense of where the health is, as well as areas where the tissues feel ‘frozen’. Such areas are the site of trauma (in the broadest sense, and whether originating from accident, disease or any other reason), which is encapsulated in this way until it can be safely dispersed/reorganised by the system.
In CST the therapist holds a ‘conversation’ through her hands with the person’s system, and supposts and encourages its return to a state of equilibrium. There is therefore no manipulation, and as it is the system’s innate wisdom which governs the process, no overwhelm: changes take place only at the rate the person’s system can deal with them.
Who can benefit?
CST can be beneficial in many conditions. For example:
Neurological e,g, multiple sclerosis
Endocrine
Skeleto-muscular eg. Whiplash injuries
There are no contraindications although therapists usually avoid treating women in their first trimester of pregnancy.
What happens in a treatment?
When you come to see me for an initial treatment I will take a brief medical history. Treatment is usually given lying on a couch, removing footwear only. It is important for the process that you are as comfortable as possible. I will ask you to scan how you feel in your body, and to find somewhere that has a feeling of ease, where you can place your attention as a resource, and this supports your system in the CST process.
It is impossible to say what any particular indiividual will experience during a CST session; some people sink into a state of relaxation and almost go to sleep; others remain quite alert. Some people feel movement taking place in, for example, their spine. There are no rights or wrongs; I will ask you to give me feedback if any discomfort arises. I usually start by contacting your feet unless you have a particular objection to that; after that where I make contact depends on where it feels needed; certainly at some point this will involve contacting the midline, the head and spine including the sacrum – the base of the spine. I will ask you if there is anywhere that you do not wish to be touched. ‘Pain is no gain’.
How many treatments are necessary?
This will depend on what kind of issue is being addressed. Generally speaking, the longer a condition has been present, the more sessions will be required to deal with it. Sometimes, in an acute condition, just one session is enough, with maybe one more to consolidate. Sometimes people can come regularly for many months or even years; there are no hard and fast rules and it is you, the patient who decides in the end how long you wish to keep coming.

My full rate if you are fully waged is £40 an hour; concessionary rates are also available.
