What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy was the first complementary therapy to be recognised as a regulated primary healthcare profession and consists of a modern, scientifically based system of diagnosis and treatment of faults that occur in the muscles and joints of the body.
These faults, as well as sometimes causing localised pain, can also have far reaching effects upon the well being of the whole body.
Other parts of the body can be affected by poor gait or altered posture and, or, in the case of spinal injuries, by disturbance to the normal supply of blood or nerve impulses.
Babies, children and Osteopathy?
All parents know how distressing it is to have an unwell child, (it doesn't matter how old they are), and that they will go to almost any lengths to help that child get well.
It is important to remember to discuss any concerns you have with your doctor, Midwife or Health Visitor so that any medical problems are resolved. Then tell your osteopath what you expect from treatment for your child. Expectations are often far too high!
The treatment is gentle. There are NO manipulations, clicks or rough movements. If in doubt, ask questions. What we try to offer is a non-threatening, non-invasive and effective therapy for some common childhood problems.
Ultrasound
The Adur Osteopathic Clinic can now offer Real-Time Dynamic Ultrasound Imaging.
Ultrasound machine Best known for visualizing babies in the womb, the use of ultrasound imaging in musculo-skeletal medicine and therapy is relatively new, but expanding rapidly.
The technique is safe and non-invasive, as demonstrated by its use in obstetric medicine. At this clinic, its principal use will be in showing you, on a screen, how selected abdominal and spinal muscles are working whilst Andrew Bellamy instructs you on appropriate exercises.
Dry needling & Osteopathy
More recently a branch of acupuncture called 'Myofacial Acupuncture' or 'Dry Needling' has been developed in the West. This uses acupuncture needles but is aimed more directly at rebalancing disturbances in the body's musculo-skeletal framework and at reducing pain.
Indian Head Massage
What is involved?
Indian Head Massage includes massage to the head, face, neck, shoulders, upper back and arms.
The patient sits upright and massage can be given through light clothing or directly on the skin, using oils.
You will not be asked to remove any clothing if you don't want to, but please do wear a lightweight top.
Reflexology
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology consists of pressure and massage applied to specific points on the feet and sometimes hands. There are zones and reflexes on the feet that correspond to all other body parts. Reflexologists can detect tiny deposits and imbalances and working on these points with gentle massage can release blockages and restore the free flow of energy to the whole body.
Shiatsu
What is Shiatsu?
SHIATSU is a non-invasive massage therapy, first developed in Japan. It is closely related to acupuncture but uses NO needles.
Your practitioner will use gentle pressure with thumbs and hands over specific points, as well as stretching and soft tissue manipulation techniques.
Sessions last about an hour and take place on a futon at floor level. Treatment can be given while seated if necessary. The patient remains fully clothed for the treatment.
Headache & Migraine
Most people suffer headaches at some stage in their life. Thankfully, for most people they are few and far between, but others suffer on a more frequent basis with pain that lasts from minutes to days. Such pain ranges in intensity from being a slight inconvenience, causing little or no interruption to the daily routine, to being a dreadfully debilitating condition, ruining the life of the sufferer.
Many people who suffer quite severe headaches accept their lot with little complaint and often do not consider the possibility of treatment. Their suffering may not be inevitable as there are a variety of treatments that can reduce or eliminate headaches. Orthodox medicine has many successful medications particularly for the alleviation of the very severe pain of migraine. Osteopathy, Homeopathy and Acupuncture should also be considered as a primary treatment for headaches.
