Welcome to Pilates with Rebecca Edwards
What is Pilates?
Pilates recognises that in daily life muscles are regularly overused, underused and often misused, generally creating an imbalance in the body. An imbalance such as this can lead to poor posture, which then not only effects your body shape, but also your body's health. Back related problems are a very common effect of poor posture or incorrect use of muscles.
Pilates is a unique form of exercise which concentrates on developing the deep postural muscles in order to align the body correctly. Most of the mat based exercises use the weight of your own body to provide the resistance, however some equipment may also be used in classes which give an added dimension to the exercises. By attending a Pilates class you should become more aware of how you use the body in every day life.
The beauty of Pilates is that you can do this whilst targeting various body parts, helping to gain a better body shape, improving posture, flexibility and mobility whilst relieving tension from the body and mind.
Rebecca Edwards
I have worked throughout Cumbria teaching various exercise classes and gym instruction since 1996 and now spend my time teaching Pilates in the Kendal, Windermere and Barrow in Furness areas.
From childhood my key interests have been related to health and wellbeing, and I have followed this passion through life. I started as a gym and swimming instructor following college, and kept developing my knowledge as a fitness professional, I am now qualified and have many years experience in teaching exercise classes, swimming, aquafit, circuits, gym to advanced level, personal training and Pilates. I set up and ran a weight management group within a health club and have also been trained in writing exercise prescriptions for GP referred clients with specific needs for their health and fitness training. Due to the mix of people that take up Pilates, I find this experience very beneficial.
I have a holistic approach to life and love the mind body connection that Pilates promotes. After years of teaching high impact classes I have moved my focus toward a gentler approach to exercise. I came to Pilates in early 2000 when I first experienced a class abroad, keen to keep practicing I found a class in my area that got me hooked! So impressed by the results that Pilates brought to my body (shape and strength) without the impact that many other exercises bring, I was inspired to start teaching Pilates myself to share this wonderful exercise with others. I started teaching Pilates over 2 years ago, mainly classes but also with one to one clients. Keeping a fit body and mind is very important to me, and I find that Pilates offers well rounded training for both.
It is important to keep up to date with training so I attend workshops and training programmes to develop my knowledge and abilities as a teacher. I hope to be able to show you how Pilates can work not only to help make you fitter, but also to help you become more aware of your own body and just what it can achieve.
