SEPARATING THE MYTH FROM REALITYWhat do people mean when they say the word Counselling?
What does it mean to be counselled?
What kind of people are counsellors?
How do they improve the psychological lives of millions of people?
Do they read people’s minds?
Do they prescribe cures?
Do they advice people how to live their lives?
Are they magicians?
What sorts of people seek counselling? About Us
These are just some questions people ask about counselling. You might find some of them rather bizarre and outlandish, but believe me I have been asked all of them. I will try to give a clear view of the reality of counselling, how it works and what to expect from it. The main thing about counselling is that it works time and time again. Prove of this is found in the millions of people who have counselling every day successfully.
The purpose of counselling is to facilitate and provide the environment where clients can talk about their concerns in a neutral confidential and safe way, supported by a trained professional. During these conversations and explorations, an awareness of what might possibly be the cause of their distress, anxiety or trauma, usually emerges.
This might happen very quickly within 8 or 10 sessions for some clients, or it might take longer if clients have many issues to resolve. The clients will be faced with this new picture or reality and it is only themselves who would make the final decision in order to change direction and improve their well being. As human beings, sometimes we create our own cages where we lock ourselves and suffer the distress these cause in many cases. “…introspection and self-awareness are the ways to learn what is right” (Socrates 4th century BC). Counselling is about helping people to realize that they have the power to relinquish the shackles in their lives and free themselves.
Counselling is about exploring our situation and changing it for the better. The counsellor is there to guide and facilitate and also to travel with the client through the therapeutic conversation, in order to understand the client’s situation. In today’s demanding world of competition, work and bringing up families, we hardly have any time for ourselves and therefore, counselling is also a golden opportunity for getting in touch with ourselves and about hearing our own voices, our wishes, our feelings when we are free from the influence of others.
Counsellors are trained to help clients reflect, consider, think and make sense of the issues that come out of the conversation between counsellor and client.
The kinds of people who seek counselling are ordinary, balanced and determined people who want to improve their lives and their relationships with others. For example:
Couples who for many reasons i.e. hidden influences, beliefs, etc. have lost their way in their relationship.
