SERVICES

Welcome to Acitve VIII Physiotherapy

Geraldine Watkins and Sarah Roberts the directors of ACTIVE VIII are proud to present Henley’s first Centre of Excellence for Sports Physiotherapy established in 1998.

Sports Physiotherapy combines the expertise of a Chartered Physiotherapist, with sports specific knowledge and the biomechanical approach of a sports scientist. Staff have undertaken additional training to achieve this level. This includes some of the highest qualifications obtainable, including Msc in Sports Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Msc in Manipulative Physiotherapy, Bsc in Remedial Sciences and Biomechanics, Diplomas in Injection Therapy, Sports Science, Sports Podiatry and Orthotics, Sports first aid and pitch-side trauma management.

Our staff are experienced Sports Physiotherapists who have been involved with Great Britain and England sports teams and individuals.

We receive referrals from the British Olympic Association and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons for the biomechanical assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries. Our centre offers wide ranging specialist services to suit the needs of sportsmen and women, from club to Olympic level.

Services

Rehabilitation

Exercise therapy is the mainstay of treatment following injury or surgery to repair ligaments, tendons, joints and prolapsed spinal discs. Physiotherapists are experts in the field of rehabilitation. Staff will use kinaesiology and exercise therapy to regain normal movement, strength and endurance of the injured area. We have muscle performance testing equipment and a comprehensive rehabilitation equipment facilities.

Manipulation & Mobilisations

We can utilise manipulation and mobilisation skills for the treatment of spinal and rib problems, including for example, sciatica, acute wry neck, trapped nerves and sprung rib. It is also used to treat any other joint problem - for example a stiff
knee.

Manipulations are high velocity low amplitude thrust techniques used to adjust restricted or malaligned structures. Mobilisation techniques are oscillatory, sustained or dynamic in nature and are graded to the particular problem and stage of recovery.

We use a variety of mobilisation techniques following surgery for problems such as cartilage and ligament repairs, and following fractures. It is also used to regain movement in stiff joints, muscles and tendons and to provide pain relief following injury or surgery.

Therapeutic Massage

Massage has long been used by physiotherapists for the treatment of soft tissue injuries such as ligament, muscle and tendon sprains and strains. It is also used in conjunction with other techniques to ease pain and tension. Many of these skills are used by Masseurs for relaxation and sport. We have experts in sports and therapeutic massage.

Pilates

Pilates exercise has been used with physiotherapy to successfully treat ballet dancers, elite rowers and athletes. It is a particularly successful adjunct to the treatment of people with low back pain and shoulder instability and can help prevent a recurrence of problems. We have physiotherapists trained in clinical Pilates, working at ACTIVE VIII.

Biomechanical Screening & Podiatry

Consultant orthopaedic surgeons frequently ask our opinion
when clients have complex problems that have not been resolved with orthodox and complementary therapies and surgery. This usually requires a full biomechanical assessment, which is normally undertaken by Geraldine.

It incorporates for example, the use of lower limb pressure analysis, video/ photography analysis, electrical studies of muscle activity and clinical examination of the joints and soft tissues. From this analysis a clinical diagnosis is made and causal factors are identified.

Treatment is usually multi faceted, incorporating for example, bespoke orthotics to place in the shoes, an orthopaedic brace, muscle release techniques, or a return to sport rehabilitation programme.

Electrotherapy

Equipment such as ultrasound, laser, interferential, TENS, biofeedback is usually used as an adjunct to treatment. For example it may be used for pain relief, to reduce swelling and inflammation or to re-educate muscle contraction. Our staff are experts in their use.

Injection Therapy

Both Sarah and Geraldine are fully qualified in injection treatment. Injections such as steroid and local anaesthetics are beneficial for the relief of conditions such as tennis elbow, shoulder impingement problems, arthritic knees, foot, ankle and wrist tendonosis and other injuries.

Sarah is a clinical specialist to the Consuiltant Orthopaedic surgeons at the Royal Berks Shoulder Unit and specialises in upper limb problems.

Acupuncture

We have a number of staff trained in acupuncture for pain relief. We often use this treatment for sciatica, tendinitis and arthritis.

Sports Physiotherapy

We have direct links with numerous sports at national, divisional land premier level. Examples include Henley Hawks rugby, England hockey, England Universities Rugby, rowing, tennis, golf and much more. Some of our staff have travelled all over the world attending World and European Cup Championships, Four Nations and invitation tournaments.
