"A Safe Place to Talk"
SERVICES
Welcome to Wantage Counselling Service
Wantage Counselling Service was founded in 1984 to provide counselling for individuals, couples and young people over the age of 15 years. As a registered charity we are able to provide this professional service to people whatever their financial circumstances. As well as being a respected community agency we also provide counselling services to GP surgeries and schools. GPs and Psychiatric Consultants make much use of our services and comment that the WCS is particularly valuable as a voluntary addition for patients in need of long term care beyond whatever the NHS can provide.
As a BACP accredited Service we follow the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy's (BACP) Ethical Framework for Good Practice.
All our qualified counsellors have been trained to Diploma level, and receive regular practice supervision.
Up to 50 clients are seen each week, and each client may need more than 40 sessions to relieve their symptoms.
WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM OUR COUNSELLING SERVICE?
Most of us experience times when life seems too difficult, when we feel under pressure, anxious, depressed, hopeless - or in need of another perspective.

Counselling offers the opportunity to explore thoughts and feelings in a reliable, independent relationship where trust and confidentiality are respected and recognised as essential. It involves becoming aware of past patterns in out lives, looking at the limitations we all experience in ourselves and perhaps taking risks to gain new strength.
Working with a trained counsellor in a safe setting, provided by the Service for this purpose, it is possible to gain a deeper understanding of oneself and so to:
- Resolve some current and past problems
- Regain the capacity to cope
- Develop the freedom to choose and to act in more satisfying ways
- Achieve a more comfortable acceptance of both oneself and others
COUNSELLING AND THE WORKPLACE: IS THERE A LINK?
Every employer knows that there are times when people at work do not bring their best to their job. Most of the time this passes, a minor aspect of the normal ups and downs of working life. Sometimes it does not.
Work colleagues are well placed for noticing when things are not going all right. We spend the majority of our waking hours at work and it is often possible to detect when someone begins to struggle, manages less, fails to cope.
If someone is troubled, or distressed at work, this also affects everyone around them. The impact on morale and productivity can be substantial.
Many workplaces now use counselling services. Current research shows that work-related symptoms and stress return to the normal range after counselling for more than 50% of clients who use their work counselling service. Research also shows that over 90% of employees who make use of workplace counselling are highly satisfied and would recommend it to colleagues.
Wantage Counselling Service wants to be of help when it is needed. If you would like to discuss how we could work together with your Human Resources or Personnel Department, please contact us. If you would wish to have our leaflets available for your employees, please contact our office.
