About Me
My personal passion in all the various jobs that I have taken on, has always been to encourage the growth and development of individuals. In fact I realised some time ago that if I was ever going to really maximise my own potential it would be somewhere in the field of helping others to achieve theirs.
My career path has been varied, starting with a short but fruitful six years in the Cumbrian Police Force where I cut my teeth in dealing with and successfully communicating with a variety of people.
I followed my time in law enforcement with three years working alongside young people in a church based mission organisation which involved presenting seminars, teaching lessons and mentoring small groups of individuals in their own personal development. This period also included several months working in both Africa and Europe.
Since 1989, I have been working as a company director in the family business; George Barker & Sons Ltd. Timber Merchants at Backbarrow near Ulverston in Cumbria. My role in the company has been largely in business development and has included looking after sales and marketing, facilitating staff training, and administering the accounts and payroll functions.
Whilst helping to run the business, I have also taken time to develop the management skills and knowledge necessary for such a task and in doing so became interested in training others in those same skills. As a result for the last four years, I have been involved in delivering some of the material on the ILM management courses at both Kendal and Furness FE colleges with good success. This has strengthened my passion for people development resulting in the setting up of Proactive Futures in September 2006.
I have a diploma in both Personal and Business Coaching with The Coaching Academy UK, a certificate in Personal Performance Coaching and a diploma in neurolinguistic programming (NLP).
I am currently offering coaching to individuals and companies as well as the delivery of business training sessions to develop employees that are in the early stages of leadership and management.
