What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a holistic system of medicine, providing both health care and disease management. It recognizes and utilises the enormous potential of the human body to adjust repair and rebalance itself, offers individualized treatment, by analysing information, though listening, interviewing, melling, looking and pulse taking.

Acupuncture originates in China, but is now used all over the world as knowledge of its benefits increases Central to Traditional Chinese Medicine is the concept of Qi. Qi is the life force or vital energy, which flows throughout the body. In a healthy person the Qi flows smoothly around the body. If, however, this flows is disrupted for some reason, then illness can occur.

Acupuncture can correct the flow of Qi and stimulate the body’s own healing by inserting needles into specific points on the body.

What is involved?
Treatment involves the insertion of the fine sold acupuncture needles, and may include massage. You may feel a light pinprick on insertion and some sensation of dullness or heaviness. Needles are left in place for about twenty minutes whilst you rest.


Preparation for treatment:
No special preparation is required. However, you should:

Avoid alcohol

Make sure you have eaten, however, not a big meal

Not be over tired


Frequency of treatment:
The number of treatment required varies from person to person. Therefore the number of visits will depend on the individual. It is usual to visit once or twice a week to start with.

Sometimes the effects of treatment may be dramatic, and only a couple of visits are required with other patients the effects are more subtle and they may require treatment over a number of months.

Progress often depends on how long you have been unwell, your age, and condition.


Is acupuncture safe?
he needles used are pre-packed and sterilized. And used once only, before being disposed of safely.


Should I tell my doctor?
If you are receiving treatment from your doctor, then it makes sense to let him/her know of your plans.
