Person-centred counselling is based on the belief that, given the right conditions, we can all experience positive growth and realise our full potential. This approach uses the relationship between counsellor and client to create these conditions.

By offering acceptance, empathy and genuineness, Person-centred counsellors create a safe environment within which you can express and explore your thoughts and feelings, and address the problems you are facing. No attempt is made to direct you or to interpret your words. It is an approach which empowers you to find your own solutions and achieve a more authentic way of being.

"With all his firmness and self-control, he tasks himself too far: locks every feeling and pang within - expresses, confesses, imparts nothing. I am sure it would benefit him to talk..."
Charlotte Brontë in Jane Eyre (1847)

Solution-focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) concentrates on how you want your life to be in the future. SFBT counsellors ask lots of questions about what your life might be like if your problems had been solved, thus emphasising how things can be, rather than getting caught up in what you need to do in order to overcome the problems.

Although the issues you face may seem too difficult to resolve, often there are times, even brief moments, when things go better. SFBT counsellors help you to become aware of these times, to highlight what you are already doing that can help resolve your problems, and to discover the resources which are available to you within yourself and within your environment. The work also involves identifying small, manageable steps which you can take in order to move forward.

Emotional Freedom Technique

"EFT helped to reduce the severity of my migraines and left me feeling calmer and more relaxed."
KW, Liverpool

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a safe, psychotherapeutic alternative medicine tool. The theory behind EFT is that negative emotions are caused by a disruption to the body's energy system. EFT contends that, in order to remove the negative responses, the energy imbalance must be addressed at the same time as the negative emotions. The video on the right introduces the technique.

The basic EFT technique involves holding a disturbing memory or emotion in mind while simultaneously tapping on a series of 12 specific points on the body (these correspond to the meridians used in acupuncture and Chinese medicine).

Although (as with any therapy) there are no absolute guarantees of success, EFT has helped many people to free themselves from deeply-entrenched phobias, emotional distress and physical pain; others have experienced improvements in a wide range of sporting activities.

At EFT Universe you can find useful information about EFT and read how therapists, doctors, nurses and other mental health professionals have used it successfully to treat many conditions.

You can can also hear the experiences of various people who have used EFT, by watching the film "Try it on Everything". On the right, there is a trailer for the film, and you can purchase the DVD from the Tapping Solution website.

"The tapping technique worked amazingly well for me; it really helped me. I want to thank you for your help."
