What is Traditional Chinese Acupuncture?

Acupuncture has been a part of traditional chinese medicine for over 2500 years, used to restore health in a multitude of conditions.

How does it work?

There are a number of theories as to how acupuncture works, such as stimulating the nervous system and causing the secretion of chemicals called endorphins which are thought to alter the pain messages in our brain.

According to traditional chinese medicine, energy flows in channels throughout the body, stimulation of acupuncture points on these channels is believed to encourage the healing process.

What Happens During an Acupuncture Session?

In the first session, details of your problem will be taken and a diagnosis and treatment plan made. A number of acupuncture points will then be selected and very thin needles inserted into them, because the needles are very thin, you shouldn't feel more than very minor discomfort if any. All acupuncture needles are sterile single use dispoable needles used once only and then discarded safely.

Because of the information taken from you, the first session will always be longer than following sessions, about 1- 1 1/2 hours so please allow enough time for this.

How Do I Prepare for an Acupuncture Session?

You are advised not to drink alcohol on the day of your treatment or engage in strenuous exercise immediately before or after your treatment. You need to inform your acupuncturist of any medical conditions or any medication you are taking before treatment starts.

Moxibustion

This involves warming acupuncture points by burning a herb known as Moxa near the skin or on the end of the needle. It is particularly useful when people feel cold in areas of their body and when joint pain is worse due to cold and damp weather conditions

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger points are spots or areas of the muscle tissue that can cause pain, often this pain radiates to other areas of the body. These areas of tenderness and pain are thought to lead to certain illnesses. Trigger point therapy involves stimulation and treatment of these painful and tender points to relieve pain in the immediate and other areas.

Acupressure Massage

This type of treatment is an alternative to traditional acupuncture and can be used on people who don't like needles but would like the benefits of acupuncture. The treatment involves rubbing, pressing and stimulating the acupuncture points. These points can also be stimulated by heat using the Moxa herb.
