Chinese Herbal Medicine is one of the great herbal systems of the world, with an unbroken tradition going back to the 3rd century BC.
Yet throughout its history it has continually developed in response to changing clinical conditions, and has been sustained by research into every aspect of its use. This process continues today with the development of modern medical diagnostic techniques and knowledge.
Because of its systematic approach and clinical effectiveness it has for centuries had a very great influence on the theory and practice of medicine in the East, and more recently has grown rapidly in popularity in the West. It still forms a major part of healthcare provision in China, and is provided in state hospitals alongside western medicine.
Chinese Herbal Medicine, along with the other components of Chinese medicine (Acupuncture, Tuina, Shiatsu, Qigong and Tai Chi, dietary therapy), is based on the concepts of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements. It aims to understand and treat the many ways in which the fundamental balance and harmony between them may be undermined and the ways in which a person's Qi or vitality may be depleted or blocked. Clinical strategies are based upon diagnosis of patterns of signs and symptoms that reflect an imbalance.
However, the tradition as a whole places great emphasis on lifestyle management in order to prevent disease before it occurs. Chinese medicine recognises that health is more than just the absence of disease and it has a unique capacity to maintain and enhance our capacity for well being and happiness.
If appropriate I will use other modalities of Chinese medicine on top of Chinese Herbal Medicine, namely: Shiatsu, Dietary Therapy and Qigong
About Markus Grasser:
I started my formal training in Oriental Medicine in 1992 in the form of shiatsu. This took me through very intensive study and practice with several well known teachers: Michael Rose (who studied with Shizuto Masunaga, the founder of “Zen Shiatsu”) - study and assisting on all of his classes for a period of 3 years, Bill Palmer (“Movement Shiatsu”) for 4 years and Tim Mulvagh (“CBS-Classically Based Shiatsu”) - classes and supervision for 7 years.
In 2000 I founded the European Shiatsu School Brighton and have been teaching ever since all the subjects on the Practitioner Diploma course.
It is on this solid grounding of understanding/’grasping’ the meridians and the theories of Chinese Medicine through my hands that I started to study Chinese Herbal Medicine. I emphasize this because it has always been a particular passion for me to understand and teach (to students as well as patients) the energetics of chinese medicine as experiential as possible.
Therefore I can help you to understand the relationships between your dis-ease and your body, emotions, posture, environment in a more embodied way so it will truly make ‘sense’ to you and therefore also the treatment.
Testimonial
My session's with Markus have been gentle, caring, thorough and extremely effective! The inclusion of some diagnositc Shiatsu sits really well next to the herbal consultation, and gives the treatments a relaxing component that I'd miss if we were just talking. Thanks for your help Markus!
