Acupuncture Works
Traditional Acupuncture Clinics at the Lostwithiel Natural Health Clinic and Sandy Hill Physical Therapy Clinic, St Austell.
A diagnosis in traditional Oriental medicine is quite different from that of modern medicine; it is fundamentally about choosing treatment to 'regulate our Qi', our vital energy, which should be free flowing in order to be healthy. Traditional Oriental medicine seeks to balance this energy where it is disrupted. The best known method for this is acupuncture which uses ultra fine needles inserted into specific points around the body. In a treatment you may also have a herb called moxa to warm particular points.
Many people come to acupuncture for help with a specific symptom or condition. The effect of traditional acupuncture is to stimulate your own healing response and many people find that they also feel better in a more general way, feeling relaxed and revitalised.
Your first appointment takes about an hour and involves a detailed assessment of your health and usually a simple treatment, along with simple dietary and lifestyle advice. Subsequent treatments will also last an hour with a full treatment. Usually you will come weekly to begin with.
As you feel better you will come less frequently. How often you will need to come depends on various factors including your constitutional health, how long you have had the condition and its severity. It is hard to predict with certainty the outcome of treatment, but you will be given an idea of what to expect at your first visit.
Clinic Fees
- Adults - initial appointment £45, ongoing £38 (about 1 hr)
- Children - initial appointments £35, ongoing £28 (about 1/2hr)
About Jess
Jess Birmingham completed her initial acupuncture training (LicAc) at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine, Reading. She began treating people in 1996 and fully qualified in 1997. In 2008 she completed a two year Certificate in Acupuncture for Children (Cert.Ac(paed) with Julian Scott. She continues to constantly update and expand her acupuncture skills and is currently integrating Kiiko Matsumoto Japanese Style Acupuncture into her practice. She also has regular peer supervision.
She followed an indirect path to acupuncture, having originally qualified and worked across the south west as a theatre designer, painter and prop maker. A period of ill health ended with her returning to her roots to champion and teach traditional woodland management for the conservation charity BTCV, still in the south west including many projects in Cornwall. Eventually her long term interest in health led her to train as an acupuncturist in 1994.
She has worked at several complementary health clinics in Bristol, both private and as part of an NHS GP practice, before coming back to work in Cornwall again. Jess now works in Lostwithiel and St Austell, and lives locally.
Jess is a Member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) and observes their Codes of Safe Practice and Professional Conduct. The Code of Safe Practice lays down stringent levels of hygiene and requires the use of sterile disposable needles and has been recognised by the government as providing robust self-regulation which meets the need s of the general public.
