Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the main components of Chinese medicine; the others are herbalism, massage, food energetics and exercise. It has been used to restore, nourish and maintain good health by billions of people for thousands of years. Chinese medicine is one of the few medical systems to hold its own alongside the more recent developments of western medicine. It has been extensively researched, refined and developed whilst in continuous use and is now practised all over the world.
Babies, Children and Teenagers
When treating babies and young children the needles used are even finer than those used on adults, they are not retained but inserted and removed immediately. In some cases it is not appropriate to use needles therefore other treatment methods may be used such as:
- Shonishin - specialised Japanese paediatric style acupuncture using techniques that are gentle and non-invasive.
- Moxibustion - the application of warmth to points.
- Acupressure, massage or Shen Dao cranio-sacral neck release therapy using gentle acupressure.
Pregnancy and Childbirth
Pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal recovery are viewed from the perspective of Chinese medicine as a window of opportunity to enhance a woman’s well being. Conversely if adequate care is not taken the resulting problems may continue long after the birth. Value is therefore placed on promoting preventative care to strengthen the mother and baby as well as dealing with problems as they occur during pregnancy. By identifying underlying health issues that may cause disruption to the body's natural balance, acupuncture can support fertility.
Fertility focused acupuncture treatment can help to reduce tension, increase blood flow to the reproductive organs, balance hormone levels, regulate the menstrual cycle and help improve the lining of the uterus and quality of eggs released.
