About Counselling
How Can Counselling Help?
At some point in our lives, most of us will experience some emotional and/or relationship difficulties.
- Counselling can provide a safe and confidential place to explore these;
it may then be possible to develop an awareness of these difficulties
and to make sense of what is happening in your life.
- Counselling can enable you to maximise personal choices and potential which can lead to a more fulfilling and satisfying life.
How Does Counselling Work?
Counselling is a contractual arrangement by which I meet with you, in privacy and in confidence, to explore any issues you may be experiencing. This may be a loss of a loved one, feeling depressed or anxious, facing a major crisis or you may have lost a sense of direction or purpose in life. These are times when we can feel totally isolated, everyone around us seems absolutely fine. Whether these difficult feelings and thoughts are happening now or have happened in the past, I believe therapy can offer you the chance to heal and develop.
Good therapy, in creating this safe and confidential environment, gives you the opportunity to be heard and listened to, it also affords you the time and space to explore your thoughts and feelings, so you may reach a better understanding of yourself and your relationships with others.
How Many Sessions?
This is always hard to answer, as counselling is a very individual experience; it can vary from four sessions upwards, I would always agree with you though, that we have regular reviews of our sessions. Individual counselling sessions are usually for fifty minutes and at weekly intervals (especially initially).
My own approach to sessions is flexible; brief intervention work, through to long term therapy, this will be dependent upon your need. Brief Intervention Work: For short term problems, which can be a reaction to a life event.
Longer Term Therapy: For difficulties you may have been struggling with over a longer period of time.
What Can You Expect From Me?
In being an integrative therapist just means that I have been trained in more than one theoretical approach. I use all my training and knowledge in order to find the best possible way of helping you achieve your goals and the right result for you. I work with individuals, couples and young people. I have worked with people coming from varied cultural and social backgrounds, and I see each person as an individual. Counselling and psychotherapy are 'talking therapies', which means they are conversations people have with a therapist that attempts to help them make sense of their lives and how to make changes. The working relationship between client and therapist can be an important factor in obtaining a successful outcome from therapy. So my invitation to you is to feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I am more than happy to see you for an initial assessment if you feel you would like to know more about me or about what therapy involves.
Counselling or Psychotherapy?
Both aim to do the same thing, the distiction may be seen as psychotherapy takes a more traditional way of looking at long standing problems. They are however both ways which can lead to understanding why we behave and think the way we do.
Please Note
Counselling and psychotherapy are always undertaken at the request of the client. No-one can properly be ’sent’ for counselling or psychotherapy. There are many situations these days where people with influence in our lives (perhaps a relative, manager at work, or teacher) will suggest talking therapies as a solution to a problem. This should be offered without any pressure or strings attached (BACP).
