Holistic and Massage Therapy in Brighton and Hove
About Amanda
Amanda has been a full-time therapist for 8 years and originally developed an interest in massage while studying at the London Contemporary Dance School. However, it was the result of receiving treatments to counteract the stress and fatigue of working long hours back stage in theatre that led her to a change of lifestyle and career.
After her original training at the Wilbury Centre, Hove, Amanda studied at City College, Brighton and with the Football Association at Chichester College. Each therapy she has studied has led to another, as she feels that one of the most rewarding aspects about her vocation is that there is always more to learn.
Amanda enjoys tailoring each treatment to meet the individual needs of each client, from the choice of essential oils and massage techniques to combining different therapies for a unique experience and effective therapy.
Amanda is now starting a new career as a teacher, having qualified as a Reiki Master in 2007 she is now teaching Reiki Courses at Yogahaven.

A Typical Treatment with Amanda
Consultation
Amanda and you will discuss your medical history and any injuries or areas of muscular tension are highlighted, taking into account your occupation and lifestyle. Amanda will assess your posture, as posture affects every muscle in the body, imbalances can be recognised and Amanda can decide which specific techniques will be most effective.
Treatment
Amanda can then give you a ‘tailormade’ treatment, including massage, home and exercise advice, ensuring that your individual needs are met.
Muscles work in tandem and so the body can become misaligned by poor muscle tone, Massage and exercise can influence posture in many ways; by stretching tight and shortened muscles and strengthening weak ones, mobility can be improved, injury can be prevented and posture can be realigned.
Recovery Advice
Amanda encourages you to take an active part in your recovery. Sports Therapy can be used pre or post exercise to prevent and treat injury. You may be given home advice such as stretching and strengthening exercises or the use of heat/ice to enhance rehabilitation of injuries. Amanda may also recommend changes in exercise and lifestyle to improve posture and reduce risk of future injury.
Outcomes
You will often find improvements in the following areas:- Pain relief
- stress relief
- Better mobility/flexibility/posture
- A feeling of being one’s self again
- Improved propriaception – body awareness – becoming more aware of how the body is positioned or moves
- Lower blood pressure
- Increased lymphatic drainage
- Headache relief
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage, an important part of sports therapy, can release muscular trauma and tension and improve joint mobility by relaxing and stretching the muscles, ligaments and fascia. Deep pressure techniques are slowly applied using forearms, elbows, knuckles and thumbs, allowing the muscles to lengthen and the body to realign itself.
Sports Therapy and Sports Massage
Sports Therapy incorporates many different techniques, such as;- Postural Assessment – analyses potential postural imbalances.
- Neuro Muscular Technique/ Trigger Point Therapy – breaks down adhesions and releases extreme muscle tension.
- Soft Tissue Release - stretches and breaks down specific areas, such as scar tissue.
- Muscle Energy Technique – strengthens and stretches muscles, also encourages body awareness.
- Connective Tissue Manipulation – increases mobility in the muscles and fascia and helps to balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
Qualifications
Amanda is qualified in Advanced and Remedial Injury Massage (IIHHT) and holds Football Association Level 2 & 3 Certificates in the Treatment and Management of Injuries. She also holds a current F.A. Child Protection and Best practice Certificate.
The Science
There are many causes for muscular tension, ’knots’ and injury.
All soft tissue (muscles, ligaments and tendons) are covered in a layer of connective tissue called fascia. If the fascia is not lubricated, as a result of restricted or repetitive movement, it becomes tough and scar tissue can form.
Often when a muscular trauma occurs the body will increase tension in the surrounding tissues to protect the injury. Also a natural response to the pain of muscular injury is to reduce movement which can cause the injury to become tighter and tighter.
When soft tissue becomes scarred, possibly as a result of surgery or injury, the scar tissue will often knit together as it heals causing a knot of tissue which may reduce flexibility.
Massage can break down adhesions, release muscular trauma and restore mobility to the fascia, muscles, tendons and ligaments using a variety of different techniques. This allows the body to realign itself, increasing performance and reducing stress and tension.
