About Andrew

I am a member of the British Acupuncture Council, which guarantees I have been trained to the highest standards. I regularly undertake post graduate training to further enhance my knowledge and skills. I am a fully qualified and insured acupuncturist and massage therapist.

I have a degree in acupuncture which included the study of anatomy, physiology and pathology, enabling me to understand a wide range of western medical conditions and how they can be treated with acupuncture. This understanding can also be applied via bodywork and massage.

I have a diploma in tui na (Chinese massage). Where appropriate, combining massage with acupuncture can have a greater therapeutic affect on your symptoms.

I came to Chinese medicine from Tai ji, and still teach and practice tai ji, qi gong and meditation..

Tui Na Massage

Tui na massage is a highly effective treatment for musculo-skeletal pain.

Tui na is a holistic massage based on the principles of Chinese medicine, involving a wide variety of techniques to knead and work the muscles and tissues of the body, to promote blood flow, break up scar tissue and speed healing.

Any pain or discomfort you experience is due to imbalances in the body’s tissues; this is what we are working with in Tui Na and Acupuncture. When I balance out the circulation and relieve your stress, your body and mind can better deal with whatever is hampering it.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a powerful treatment for a wide variety of conditions.

Common areas of treatment:
  • Musculo-skeletal pain (back or neck ache, sciatica, tennis elbow, sports injuries)
  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Stress, anxiety and depression
  • Insomnia
  • Eyes, ears, nose and throat conditions
  • Digestive problems (irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhoea)
  • Fatigue
  • Menstrual problems
  • Improving circulation
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Allergies, asthma and lowered immune system
  • Unexplained conditions

This list is not comprehensive; Chinese medicine has an understanding that can be applied to all of the body’s processes, and an integrated view of the body, mind and emotions which allows one to influence all three through treatment.

The World Health Organisation has pubished a review of research which showed the effectiveness of acupuncture for over 60 conditions. More recently, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence recommended acupuncture for lower back pain. The Western research supporting the use of acupuncture is building. In China, it is accepted that acupuncture is a powerful therapy, and hospitals commonly have acupuncture, tui na and herbal medicine departments as well as the full range of Western treatments. All of these forms of Chinese medicine have documented histories going back over two thousand years.

When you experience pain and discomfort of any kind, your body tissues also change. It is this change that we are looking to find and work with in acupuncture and tui na massage or bodywork, for example by warming cold and cooling heat.

Lifestyle Advice

Lifestyle advice is a vital ingredient of Chinese medicine treatments. It is the part that enables practitioners to empower you to heal yourself. My advice invariably comes back to three things you can do something about: how you think, your diet and your activities (which often but not always means exercise).

We are very often unaware of how what we do creates the situations we are in, or feel unable to influence our situations. It is possible to change our lives, and to initiate growth and transformation. Chinese medicine is one way to begin this process, through insight into the cycles that lead us to seek treatment.

The advice that I give is not about obligations but greater freedom and the choice to change and to achieve a more harmonious balance in life, pointing the way to greater happiness.
