Anne Whitehead is a teaching member of STAT (Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique).
She works in Bacup, Rossendale and at Physiofusion in Burnley and Padiham. She is also currently working with acting students at The Arden in Manchester and young musicians at Chethams School of Music
Anne also teaches Tai Chi Chuan and finds that the principles of the Alexander Technique complement the beautifully balanced and open movements of the Tai Chi forms and exercises. Classes offer students the opportunity to learn the Cheng Man Ching form, applications, ‘pushing hands’ and two person forms, and weapons. The emphasis of the training is for students to learn about themselves and to make the principles of Tai Chi central in their daily living, if they so choose!
Anne teaches Tai Chi Chuan in Bacup, Burnley and Hebden Bridge.
Life is an amazing and often difficult journey encompassing a myriad of physical, emotional and mental states and experiences. As human beings we begin life in a tiny body that develops and grows by feeding all the senses. A healthy child’s body is relaxed, supple, and movement is free from over tension and tightening. Watch a small child play and see their little body move effortlessly, in the way nature designed it to move.
So, what happens to us? Well, life just isn’t a smooth, easy journey (unless you are very lucky), and we start to store up all our experiences, both good and bad, into muscular tension and habitual emotional and mental reactions. It doesn’t take very long before habits become very set and we are unable to change them, that’s if we are even aware of them in the first place!
The mind and body are inseparable and therefore our physical tensions affect our mental and emotional states and vice versa. We may notice our posture not looking so good, we may suffer from neck and back pain, an inability to relax or let go of muscular tension, an increase in stress and other anxiety states, or a general sense of not having the freedom to move easily or enjoy sports, hobbies and interests like we could or used to do.
The Alexander Technique helps us to identify our harmful habits and teaches us how to regain a better sense of balance, alignment and freedom of movement to apply to our daily living. When we are in balance and using appropriate levels of tension we are healthier, happier, more relaxed and able to enjoy life more.

Testimonials
A physiotherapist suggested that I take up the Alexander Technique as a way of finding a long term solution to my chronic lower back pain. Studying with my teacher Anne Whitehead has brought huge improvements to my posture and my body as a whole. I have learned to let go of the ingrained, habitual tensions I always thought of as normality. I have replaced these tensions with my own choice of directions as I sit, stand and walk through daily life. Anne has given me my tool-kit for good posture and well being. I use this tool-kit on a daily basis applying it to my mental and physical needs as I encounter them each day. I now move easily and freely at my own speed. My hobby as a musician has benefited enormously. I am now able to let go of the old ingrained tensions and enjoy a much more relaxed approach to my guitar. I have not experienced lower back pain for over a year.

The headaches have gone now and so has the pain I had around my ribcage. I feel so much better. I have even started to lose weight, albeit very slowly, and I have joined a gym. I am swimming twice a week as well. It was the best thing I ever did coming to see you, and I would like to thank you for all your help.

Learning Alexander Technique allows me to pause without reacting. Choosing how to respond to dialogue or whatever I am presented with. I am in control of my body, being aware and present in the moment at all times, habitually my senses would react, Alexander Technique gives me the Actor the choice of direction.
