Welcome to ArtofPilates

ArtofPilates is dedicated to sharing the enormous benefits of Pilates making it accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels.

It is a safe exercise method and when performed regularly, it will also give you an enormous sense of well-being to relieve unwanted stress and tension. Classes are available in the Queens Park, Willesden Green and Kilburn area of NW London. Semi-private and private 1:1 classes can also be arranged in your home.

About Pilates

Joseph Pilates, born in Germany in 1880, was a skinny and sickly child, who suffered from rickets, asthma as well as rheumatic fever.

He became obsessed with restoring his own health and improving his body condition. During his lifetime he became an accomplished athlete, partaking in skiing, boxing, gymnastics, circus training, weight training and self-defence to overcome his fragility. These influences helped him to devise the method known today as ‘Pilates,’ which incorporates a perfect balance of strength and flexibility to build abdominal strength and body control. In his words the Pilates method, “develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.”

Today, Pilates consists of original and evolved exercises done on a mat or on one of many pieces of equipment. Pilates still follows Joe’s original principles, which include: Concentration, Control, Breathing, Flow, Centering, and Precision. Exercises are designed for beginners, intermediate and advanced levels and can be developed depending on the individual need.

Joe’s physical fitness and general well-being continued well into his 70s, during which he continued to perform his ‘Pilates’ exercises.

Pilates is a stimulating series of exercises for your body and mind to improve your strength, flexibility and mobility.

Classes, which are held in venues around London, focus on full body movement using specific exercises to re-educate and develop correct muscle recruitment helping you with every day activities.

Pilates will change the way you look, the way you feel and how you move. You will develop better breathing patterns and posture and you will move with ease and efficiency. Your core strength, stability, co-ordination and balance will improve and you will develop longer, stronger and more flexible muscles. And, if you are a keen sportsperson, Pilates can help you enhance your performance and prevent injury.

About Me

As a keen runner (member of London’s Serpentine Running Club) and all round sportsperson, I regularly incorporate Pilates in my training plan.

Through practising Pilates, I have experienced the huge benefits that it can bring both as rehabilitation and prevention of injury, as well as making me stronger and more able to withstand the stresses of running. This initiated my desire to pursue my interest of how the body works and to develop teaching skills, so that I can share the benefits of Pilates with everyone.

I trained as a Pilates Foundation matwork teacher with Allison Swan in London, completing a one-year comprehensive matwork course. During my training, I worked with a range of clients including those rehabilitating from injuries and operations; those living with health conditions such as osteoporosis, hip replacements, arthritis and shoulder problems; and sportspeople, as well as teaching older adult classes. The experience has been as rewarding, as it has been motivational and has illustrated the huge benefits that Pilates can bring to people of all ages and abilities.

Exercises will be matwork based sometimes using small pieces of equipment such as a foam roller, clini-band, Swiss ball or overball.

Pilates Matwork Classes for Serpentine Running Club Only

Group sizes are maximum 8. The focus of sessions will be on encouraging awareness of the core, good posture, breathing and economy of movement. It will help you to strengthen key postural muscles to ensure that imbalances are addressed and it will help you stretch areas that have become tight through overuse. Regular sessions can help you manage an injury and accelerate your return to fitness, as well as helping to keep you injury-free.

Individual or Small Group Classes

It makes for a much more personal Pilates session. As a beginner it is an ideal starting point to ensure correct movement patterns are established early on. It’s also ideal if you are more experienced and want more of a physical and intense Pilates challenge. You can have a 1:1 or share the cost with one or two friends or family members, in the convenience of your own home.

Running Specific Classes and 1:1 Sessions

How Pilates can benefit Runners

Pilates provides perfect conditioning for the athlete. It improves core stability, alignment and posture so that you can run stronger, faster and for longer, with more efficiency, ease and power. Classes are designed to help you address biomechanical weaknesses and muscle imbalances, helping to keep you injury free and facilitate rehabilitation programmes.

From each session, you will develop increased body awareness, flexibility, balance and better co-ordination. Classes will incorporate functional standing as well as modified and original Pilates exercises. You’ll take away an appreciation of what exercises and movement patterns would benefit you, and you’ll receive handouts to assist in your understanding of what you learnt during the session.
