What is Art Therapy?
Art Therapy is a unique creative process where art and psychotherapy combine to aid individual growth, awareness and healing. In art therapy no art skills are required – you are free to make images which provide a more tangible and immediate way to express feelings and emotions. The aim is to release creativity, increase awareness, ease distress, resolve conflicts, and/or cope with trauma.
Art therapy is very useful for clients who may be seeking psychotherapy or counselling and want to explore their issues through this unique approach. Art therapy offers confidential help with emotional problems, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, bereavement, depression, anxiety, feeling stuck, health problems and general life struggles.
The making of art by its very nature is healing. By engaging in the non-verbal process you can discover new insights and self-understanding, supported by the art therapist who guides you through the process. It is a supportive experience and the content of the sessions, as well as the artwork, is kept safe and confidential.
Today, art therapy is not only an effective therapy for emotional difficulties but it is also something people are turning to for personal and creative development. Recently it has been attracting people who simply want to have a pleasurable and insightful experience. You don’t have to have psychological problems to benefit from art therapy. It is life enhancing for people of all ages and all walks of life.

Art therapy is now recognized within the National Institute of Clinical and Health Excellence (NICE) guidelines as a recommended treatment method for some mental health conditions. The evidence shows that art therapy is beneficial to people with schizophrenia: with “improvements in mental health and social functioning” and “with a greater impact on negative symptoms which tend to be less responsive to antipsychotic medication” (Crawford & Patterson, 2007).
“Arts therapies appear to be popular with patients and may result in improved mental health, especially reductions in negative and general symptoms of schizophrenia, which are those least responsive to pharmacological interventions” (Crawford & Patterson, 2007).
