Conditions and Advice

Work related postural problems

Awkward movements and bad posture cause musculoskeletal disorders that affect the full length of the spine, from the neck to lower back, as well as the shoulders, arms and fingers.

Spending long periods of time in the same position makes spine and muscle problems more likely. Fortunately, simple steps taken early on can reduce the risk of such problems developing.

Upper and lower limb sports injuries

This area can be varied from throwing or racket sports to football, running, golf or swimming. The philosophy at Belgrave physio is for you to continue in your sport but with the correct advice, education and treatment.

Whiplash

Hyperextension (over-extension) injury to the neck, often the result of being struck from behind, as in a road traffic accident (RTA).

Whiplash is commonly associated with RTA’s, usually when the vehicle has been hit in the rear. However, the injury can be sustained in many other ways, including sports, falls and trips.

Arthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) or degenerative joint disease, is the most common type of arthritis. OA is a chronic condition characterized by the breakdown of the joint’s cartilage. The breakdown of cartilage causes the bones to rub against each other, causing stiffness, pain and loss of movement in the joint. It is one of the most commonly treated conditions within physiotherapy and there are many strategies and techniques which can manage this condition.

Neck and back pain

Neck and back pain are also common complaints and often treated by physiotherapists. Many causes include long periods sitting in the chair at work or in the car, repeated bending, lifting or carrying, heavy impact sports, being overweight, poor core stability muscle function, sleeping in odd positions, during or after pregnancy…..the list goes on. Often the treatment is simple and we will provide you with a well structured home exercise programme to help manage your pain better in the future.

Acute and chronic musculoskeletal problems

At Belgrave physio we see injuries which have only recently occurred (acute) and also injuries which won’t seem to go away (chronic).

Headaches

Tension in the supporting muscles of the neck, caused by physical or emotional stress, makes them tight and uncomfortable. This tension is most often felt in the upper back and back part of the neck.
Tension or stress headaches may be experienced, with discomfort and pain spreading from the upper back and neck over the head.

Biomechanical problems

Biomechanics is the science concerned with the internal and external forces acting on the human body and the effects produced by these forces. Ideally those forces need to be spread over our joint surfaces so not to put too much pressure on one particular area. These problems can be a result of how we throw, stand, walk, positions and postures while at work or the type of footwear we use. At Belgrave physio we will assess the affected areas and put in place strategies to off-load these excessive stresses or pressures.

Pain Relief

There are several modalities used for pain relief. They include electrotherapy (TENS, Interferential and Ultrasound) and also acupuncture. Matthew has been trained by the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists.

Sprains and strains

Sprains and strains can be sport related, work related or simply occur whilst at home during DIY or in the garden. Sprains and strains relate to soft tissues like muscles, tendons and ligaments and are commonly treated within physiotherapy.

Pre and post orthopaedic surgery

When surgery is needed it is essential to have the right advice before and after operations in order for optimal results to be achieved. We deal with the rehabilitation of all orthopaedic surgical procedures (both upper and lower limb).

COMMONLY TREATED CONDITIONS INCLUDE

  • Knee arthroscopies

  • Total knee replacements

  • Total hip replacements

  • All shoulder procedures

  • Back and neck surgery
