Treatments I currently offer
My initial training as an osteopath is the basis of my approach, but nowadays I prefer to use more gentle techniques such as cranial osteopathy and Bowen therapy.
Cranial Osteopathy
Cranial osteopaths use their hands to feel a subtle, rhythmical shape-change that occurs throughout the body. This movement is characteristic of all living cells, tissues and organisms and is an expression of body fluids, especially cerebrospinal fluid, which have a tide-like, ebb and flow movement. The quality of this rhythm changes in response to the effects of stress or trauma so this approach is helpful for identifying how trauma is being held in a client’s body in the form of strains or restrictions. The osteopath can then work gently with this fluid mechanism to ‘reflect’ back to the body the strain pattern, and the strain pattern can begin to soften and resolve.
The Bowen Technique
The Bowen Technique is a subtle, hands-on therapy aimed at promoting the body’s own capacity for healing and readjustment. The technique involves the therapist using her hands to perform a series of precise rolling moves over the muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia in various parts of the body. It is not a form of massage, but rather a specific stimulus that promotes healing and structural realignment to occur in a gentle but profound way.
There are regular pauses during the treatment, which give the body time to respond and to heal itself. After a treatment, clients usually feel deeply relaxed. The process of body-readjustment may then continue for at least seven days. During this time the client is advised not to pursue any other hands-on treatments.
Commonly treated conditions
I treat many people who have back pain, neck pain and joint pain and also a wide variety of problems, including: asthma, autism, cerebral palsy, depression, digestive problems, facial neuralgia, headaches/migraines, hormonal imbalances, menstrual pain, muscle aches/sprains, nervous disorders, sciatica, sinusitis, spinal curvature, TMJ/jaw disorders. Both cranial osteopathy and Bowen therapy are also particularly helpful for babies and children because they are so gentle and non-invasive. I regularly treat babies and children with problems such as, breathing problems, restlessness or the effects of a difficult birth or with developmental problems or aches and sprains as a result of injuries. The list of problems that benefit from treatment may be endless. There are also many clients who come for treatment regularly simply for ‘maintenance’ and for the increased feeling of well-being that treatment can bring.
