Your Therapist
I'm Charles Baron.
I have recently taken early retirement from my job as a consultant physician, working in the speciality of occupational medicine. I have consulted with thousands of patients over many years and helped them to address and avoid health problems caused by work and to overcome problems that interfere with working. Many of these problems are related to musculoskeletal issues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and bones). I have also advised many people who have stress and anxiety problems that manifest themselves in physical symptoms of pain and reduced mobility, due to muscle tension. Headache, neck pain, low back pain and insomnia are all common in this group.
Having spent many years in medical practice, I became interested in finding a more hands on way of helping people with these problems. I researched a number of physical therapies and was impressed by Raynor massage, the principles of which impressed me and made sense medically. I enrolled with the training course provided by Dave Taylor. Since training, I have found that the system really does work. As a cyclist with a sore shoulder, I can vouch for how effective the Raynor technique has been on me personally.
The Raynor Technique
Raynor massage is a deep tissue therapeutic technique with one goal, to find and release tension in the body.
It is definitely not a "pamper" type of massage or one during which you will fall asleep.
The therapist will be using a precise system to apply the appropriate amount of pressure and depth to the areas causing problems.
This technique is tailored to the specific needs of the individual client and so is suitable for people of any age or level of fitness.
The Raynor technique has been found to be very effective for a range of different problems that can cause chronic or persistent pain, including low back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and hip pain. Also persistent pain caused by sports and other injuries, overuse injuries and postural problems.
It is suitable for people of any age and any level of fitness.
More about the Raynor Technique and its origins
The Raynor technique was developed in Australia by Brandon Raynor. He had studied a number of Eastern methods including Shiatsu, Accupressure and Reflexology. He was trained in deep tissue massage but the breakthrough came in the realisation that therapeutic massage needs to focus on a single goal. This is finding and releasing tension anywhere in the body. He incorporated some of the Eastern techniques and philosophy into his own method. He also recognised that tension in one part of the body can cause and maintain tension in other parts and that it is essential to find and release problems (or blockages) in those other areas. These are often in the extremities, the feet and calves, the hands and forearms and the head. That's what makes the Raynor technique quite different from most ordinary sports massages and most other forms of deep tissue massage.
My medical take on how Raynor massage works
I've studied and practiced medicine for many years before I recently retired. I have consulted with many patients with chronic pain. Even when the primary cause is known and understood (perhaps a trapped nerve in the neck or back, or an arthritic condition in one or more joints), there is usually muscle tension and pain extending from the area of the primary cause. This is because it is impossible to relax completely when you are in pain. Unfortunately, tensing muscles, often unintentionally, makes them even more painful, and the tension can spread to nearby structures. A vicious cycle that makes things worse. In addition, if we have pain in one part of the body, we tend to favour another. This affects posture and movement causing tension in structures some distance away. So, for example, a twisted ankle can cause neck and shoulder pain.
Anyone who has had cramp will know that squeezing, pummelling and stretching the affected muscle can bring relief. By seeking out, working on and stretching all these related areas of tension in the whole body, the Raynor therapist can gradually break into the vicious cycle that makes things much worse. Anyone and everyone gets these problems from time to time. Cyclists get sore shoulders and hamstrings, runners sore feet, calves and hips, gardeners sore backs, sedentary office workers sore necks, mothers carrying children - sore backs and shoulders, and so on. Older people can be less active and develop stiff and painful muscles. No-one is really immune. The vicious cycle keeps the pain going long after any injury has taken place. Raynor massage techniques can often help people of any age and level of fitness to overcome the problems described by getting rid of the residual tension (the tension that stays in the muscles and other soft tissue structures, even when we are resting and not using them).

Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY MASSAGE?
You will be "draped" during the massage, with only the relevant body part exposed. As light oil is used during the massage, it will be helpful for you to undress down to your underwear. For ladies, it is much easier to massage the back with the bra removed or the straps undone. Your modesty will be protected at all times and private parts of the body will not be exposed or massaged.
WHAT AREAS WILL BE MASSAGED?
The areas where any problems have been experienced are likely to be massaged. In addition other areas where there may be tension and "blocks" that need removing, will also be examined and massaged. These are likely to include back, neck, shoulders, head, arms, hands, legs and feet. Private areas will not be exposed or massaged.
WILL THE MASSAGE HURT?
You will be having a deep tissue therapeutic massage, presumably because you have some long term pain or tension problem. The treatment will involve massaging the tender areas, so you must expect some discomfort. HOWEVER, the therapist will use a system where you grade the amount of pressure on a 1 to 10 scale (where 1 is light touch and 10 is the most pressure you would want to experience). He is aiming at a grade 7 or perhaps 8. By definition this will be tolerable to you because you are setting the threshold according to how you experience the massage pressure. Keeping good communication with the therapist during the massage is important.
After the massage, some people find that there is an aching feeling in the muscles and this can extend to the day after. Occasionally people experience a flu like reaction after the massage. This is usually short lived and after it has gone the individual normally feels better than ever. If you are really worried about any symptom, phone the therapist or even your GP as symptoms may not necessarily be related to your massage.
DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING BEFORE I COME FOR MY MASSAGE?
Yes. It is vital that you disclose any serious medical condition to the therapist before the massage, in case this is not compatible with therapeutic massage. Mostly this will come to light during the health assessment before your first massage. If there is some condition or treatment you are worried about, please discuss it with the therapist before booking the massage. For serious conditions, you are advised to discuss with your GP before booking.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
This will be quite variable. If the problem you are seeking to treat is longstanding (several months or years), you cannot expect that it will be solved in one or two treatments. Sometimes it can take 5 or 6 or even more to get to the bottom of the problem and see significant improvements in symptoms. After the main problem has settled, many clients like to have a regular treatment every month or so to keep them free from recurrence. If you are having treatment for a particular problem, it is sensible to allow at least 5 days after a massage (to let the tissues settle down) before having further massage treatments. It is also sensible not to leave it too long (no more than 3 or 4 weeks) before having the next treatment for a specific problem as the beneficial effects may have worn off and the therapist will have to "start again from scratch".
CAN I BRING A FRIEND OR RELATIVE WITH ME?
Yes of course. It is recognised that some people will feel more comfortable and confident with a friend or family member present. The only thing I ask is that your friend should try to keep reasonably quiet during the massage so that I can concentrate and focus on the job in hand, without distractions.
Sometimes minors (children under the age of 16) will benefit from this therapy, especially after an injury. In all cases, children under 16 must be accompanied (at all times during the massage) by a parent or guardian.
