Subdued spotlighting onto the fully mirrored walls and plenty of floor space in an uncluttered studio creates a calm ambience allowing clients to move freely during their Pilates classes.
Separate changing and showering facilities are available if necessary. In addition to the main studio there is a second smaller studio equipped with the Reformer and Cadillac in which individual and one-to-two sessions are held.
Pilates
WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates is a system of exercises based around the following key principles:
- Relaxation
- Breathing
- Concentration
- Flowing movements
- Alignment
- Co-ordination
- Centring
- Stamina
Pilates focuses on the release of tension and the use of the correct muscles in the correct way to allow free movement, to improve posture, balance and to create a girdle of strength around the torso. In doing so the body becomes longer, leaner and more toned.
THE HISTORY OF PILATES
Joseph Pilates was born in 1880. He was a very sick child suffering from rickets and asthma among other conditions. Determined to overcome his sickness, in later years he took up many forms of exercise and fitness including yoga, gymnastics, dance and weight training. As he developed his own body he put together a system of exercises creating what he felt was a perfect balance of strength and flexibility.
When he married his wife Clara and went to America, he set up a studio attracting dancers, athletes and gymnasts. An inventor, he created pieces of equipment to further challenge his clients; the reformer, Cadillac, wunda chair. His method was then taught by apprenticeship and is now in widespread use across the world.
WHY BODY CONTROL PILATES?
The Body Control Pilates association is the leading professional body for Plates teachers. All teachers work to a strict code of practice governing teaching standards and continuing professional development.
Body Control is unique in its training in that it includes a long period of supervised teaching from the most qualified teachers before teachers are considered skilled enough to teach their own clients. Pamela Neal acts as a supervising teacher for the Body Control Pilates association.
WHO IS PILATES FOR?
Pilates is suited to all ages and levels of fitness. Small teaching groups allow exercises to be tailored for individuals under supervision.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy treatment is available for a wide variety of conditions; back and neck pain, sports injuries, soft tissue injuries and joint pain.
An initial consultation will involve the physiotherapist taking a full history of the condition before a physical examination is carried out. A treatment plan and goals are agreed with the patient before treatment commences.
Treatment methods used include manual therapy, soft tissue mobilisation, massage, electrotherapy, exercise and Pilates. Patients can self refer and we are recognised by major health insurance providers.
One to Ones
In 1;1 sessions, clients can benefit from the use of the larger Pilates equipment namely the reformer and Cadillac offering more resistance, variation and challenge to the Pilates repertoire. Specific goals will be set and a programme established to suit the client.
ONE TO ONES FOR REHABILITATION
With her physiotherapy background, Pamela will take a concise medical history for those requiring specific rehabilitation post injury or surgery or if you have been diagnosed with a specific medical condition. Manual therapy will also be used if required in conjunction with your Pilates exercises.
ONE TO ONES FOR PREHABILITATION/ INJURY PREVENTION
Pilates can play a huge part in the assessment and correction of muscle imbalances which could potentially cause injury in those who play sport or train at high level.
ONE TO ONES IN PREGNANCY
Pregnancy is a very special time of change in the body and a time to pay attention to your own body. Pamela has herself, had three children and so is very familiar with the various changes that occur during the trimesters of pregnancy. Although pregnant women can also enjoy a group Pilates session, it is often useful to have some individual attention to help work on specific areas of concern.
ONE TO ONES FOR BACK PAIN
An individual session/ sessions are strongly recommended for those with back pain to help determine the cause of pain and ensure that clients are prescribed the correct exercises which they can then also use as home exercises to ensure the best possible outcome.
SMALL GROUPS
Small group sessions can be arranged offering more supervision and attention to the individual.
Classes
Classes are held in a beautiful fully mirrored studio. There is a maximum of 12 people per class to allow a good level of one to one supervision. Classes involve matwork based exercise with the use of small pieces of equipment; foam rolls, bands, toning circles, toning balls, weights, gym balls, overballs. All clients are asked to fill out an enrollment form detailing relevant medical history. If there are particular health issues a 1:1 session may be advised prior to enrolling in classes.
