The Massage

At Cornwall Sports Massage the main aim is to provide an effective treatment, I will use all of the techniques listed below during each massage session to ensure you receive a satisfying and memorable therapy.

As a Member of the Sports Massage Association (SMA) I am able to identify anyone for whom sports massage would be ill-advised or detrimental to their short or long-term well-being. I will assess each individual and provide the appropriate massage techniques, and advise on alternative action if required.

By using an SMA practitioner, you ensure that you will be receiving an individually tailored, high quality and professional massage.

Sports Massage Techniques:
  • Effleurage (stroking). Light superficial strokes warm the area up to start the massage. Deeper effleurage loosens the muscle fibres and allows me to feel for any areas of tightness. Effleurage is performed in between other techniques to flush out any particles loosened up by deeper techniques. Deeper strokes can be applied using the forearms , fists, heel of hands and elbows.

  • Petrissage (kneading). This is a rhythmic two handed massage technique which stimulates the circulation, loosens and softens the tissues and has a great warming effect. A steady rhythm is maintained and the technique travels up and down the muscle.

  • Rolling. Tissues and muscles are ‘picked up’, rolled and squeezed gently. This has a pumping effect on the circulation. This is a deep technique used in massage and is targeted at specific areas of soft tissue damage.

  • Friction and Trigger Points. These are techniques to work on muscles with specific tight areas which can be felt as little lumps or hardness. The area is located by gentle palpation using fingers and thumbs and then pressed until the lump lessens. This is sometimes uncomfortable but you will always be asked how it is feeling. Massage should never be painful.

Sports massage may:
  • Improve circulation and lymphatic flow
  • Assist in the removal of metabolic waste
  • Sedate or stimulate nerve endings
  • Increase or decrease muscle tone

About Mark

At 16 I joined the British Army and enjoyed a full and interesting career for over 22 years serving with the Commando Brigade. I am a keen sportsman and have been since I was a young boy, during my time in the Armed Forces I played Hockey and Rugby to a high standard and most notably represented Great Britain in the discipline of Telemark Skiing.

After receiving regular sports massage to help with injury rehabilitation and also as part of regular body maintenance I developed an interest in remedial exercise and injury prevention. It was this interest in mind that led me to become fully trained as a Sports Massage Therapist.

My experience of sport and rehabilitation partnered with my VTCT level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy has given me a healthy knowledge to be able to help treat many soft tissue complaints, the results of which have been fascinating and highly rewarding for me.

I am passionate about the anatomy of the musculoskeletal system and continually seek to improve my skills and further my knowledge in the field of soft tissue therapy by regularly attending continued professional development training.

Please feel free to get in touch to book an appointment or to simply discuss your needs. If I am unable to reply to your call please send me an email or text message and I will contact you as soon as I possibly can.
Many Thanks,
Mark
