What is it?
Simply speaking hypnosis in and of itself is an altered state of consciousness. Clinical Hypnotherapy or Hypnotherapy therefore, is the use of an altered state of consciousness, or ‘trance’ state, for therapeutic endpoint. This means that people are not treated with hypnosis, but are treated in hypnosis. Hypnotherapy has long been widely accepted as a most excellent method by which to access inner potential in order to encourage beneficial change to occur.
How does it work?
The subconscious is a very powerful part of our mind. It is also the source of many of our problems and self-beliefs. Our habits, learned patterns of behaviour, and our belief system are all stored in the subconscious part of our mind. From the way you handle money, to what you eat, to the way you relate to other people, to the way you see yourself as a person………there is a specific reason for the way you do every single thing in your life, and those reasons are part of the programming found in your subconscious mind.
Hypnotherapy is a perfectly natural, effective and powerful technique. It is used to create specific and positive permanent changes to unwanted habits and behaviours, to unleash potential and to find solutions to problems and concerns.
Once the individual guided into the natural state of hypnosis, the Hypnotherapist uses many different therapeutic methods ranging from giving suggestions to the subconscious mind aimed at overcoming specific problems, to hypnoanalysis which will find the initial sensitising event and the original caused of a problem.
Research / History
In 2000 a study in THE LANCET found that of 241 patients, those who were hypnotised before and during their operations had fewer problems. Not only did their procedure take less time, but 25% of them did not require any drugs for pain relief, and the rest needed very little. “Patients feel less discomfort and anxiety, and their heart rate and blood pressure are more stable” says Dr Elvira Lang Professor of Radiology.
It can also help with healing. In a 2003 study of women recovering from surgery, researchers from Harvard Medical School found that patients who saw a Hypnotherapist weekly had a faster recovery time from their operation wounds. Dr Naish of the Harvard Medical School is reported to have said “Hypnosis is not miraculous – it’s real” So, if you want a new way to tackle an ongoing problem, or you are going to have an operation, it may be worth exploring if you can get your mind and body working together to get you through.
In 2004 THE PSYCHOLOGICAL BULLETIN reported that hypnosis, combined with medication, relieved pain more effectively that medication alone.
People have successfully used Hypnotherapy for countless problems including:- Releasing counterproductive behaviours such as SMOKING and OVEREATING
- Relieving STRESS and ANXIETY
- Retaining a POSITIVE ATTITUDE
- Relaxing and enjoying a BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEP
- Eliminating BAD FINANCIAL HABITS
- Lowering BLOOD PRESSURE
- Improving SPORTS PERFORMANCE
- Increasing MEMORY RETENTION and CONCENTRATION
- Overcoming SHYNESS
- Improving PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS
- Maintaining peace of mind and CONTROLLING ANGER
- Recovering from and better results AFTER SURGERY
- Alleviating IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)
- And for many , many other problems!
Clinical Hypnotherapy has been accepted by the British Medical Association as a valuable treatment methodology since 1955. It is also a fact that a recent House of Lords Select Committee making recommendations on Complimentary and Alternative medicine ranked Hypnotherapy as one of the disciplines that “ can usefully compliment conventional medicine “ .
Who can be hypnotised?
The answer to that question is undoubtedly ‘virtually everyone’ except those with certain conditions which contra-indicate treatment. This claim however is qualified by the observation that an individual can only be taking into the state of hypnosis if they readily choose to do so. This willingness itself will depend upon a number of factors, not least of which is the strength of the person’s need and their trust and confidence with the Therapist concerned. Most researchers concur that the actual level, or depth, of trance obtained does not relate to the degree of beneficial result that can be obtained. In practice this means that even where a person may feel that they have not actually been ‘hypnotised’, given time, and this can be a very important factor, the desired outcome of therapy can materialise. The matter of ‘time’ is especially important in our current society, which has in many respects been coerced into believing that results of any kind should be instantaneous. Hypnotherapy can be amazingly effective, often after only a few sessions, but it is not a ‘magic’ solution. However, when a persons feels the circumstances and timing are right for them and with a qualified Therapist is found with whom the client is willing to work, then any realistic goals are achievable.
What happens in a hypnotherapy session?
At the initial session the Client will be encouraged to talk about what he or she wishes to achieve and any concerns they may have. Goals for therapy will be discussed and agreed and a full explanation of the process is provided.
During each session the person sits or lies in a comfortable reclining chair and listens to the sound of the Therapist’s voice whilst being taken into the hypnotic state. The Client will feel very comfortable and deeply relaxed but can still be fully aware of what is happening. The Client remains in control throughout the session and has no sensation of ‘going under ‘ and being asleep at any stage. When the session is complete the Therapist will gradually bring the Client back to full awareness and most people describe the whole experience as being very pleasant and completely relaxing. Hypnotherapy is a completely safe process and has no side effects whatsoever.
How many treatments do i need?
This is usually discussed and agreed during the initial Consultation. However the nature of the problem to be resolved will have a bearing on the number of sessions required, other than Quitting Smoking which is a special programme and requires only one session. It is a fact that Hypnotherapy is a fast and effective treatment and often results are obtained in only a few sessions.
