Penny Bould MBACP Appears as Expert on BBC - Warm Adult, Couples, Child & Family Psychotherapist / Counsellor, Psychosexual Therapist & Lifecoach - Unusually Extensive Training.
SERVICES Working with adults, couples, children, young people, families and organisations, because of her unusually broad range of training, Penny, who has appeared on the BBC as an expert many times, whatever your challenges, problems, difficulties or goals, can bring an integrative approach tailored to your needs as a unique human being, with warmth, empathy, unconditional positive regard and genuineness, whether for short, medium or long term work, to address any issue.
Saying it aloud and being really heard in therapy means, to quote artist Grayson Perry, that you are "the star in the room" in the safe and confidential space. With an extensive toolbox of techniques gleaned from helping people for decades, using innovative research based approaches Penny has helped to empower positive change for clients of all ages. Committed to continual professional development Penny has attended dozens of courses.
I am professionally qualified and registered. A former school safeguarding governor my background has been checked and declared clear by the local authority for any criminal records.
If you scroll down this page after the A to Z list of issues you will find my extensive list of QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING.
Creative but down to earth, Penny has been commissioned to write about counselling ethics for The Guardian and about issues such as trauma for professional journals. She often uses symbolic objects, unless a client prefers not to use them and also depending on the issues and the individual client sometimes uses drawing, role play work and psychological education.
Former law court and BBC reporter, producer, presenter Penny originally read psychology at university aged 18 and since then has studied psychology at two universities and a number of other institutions in addition to qualifying in counselling and undertaking post graduate studies in areas such as couple, family and psychosexual studies, Neuro Linguistic Programming and Hypnotherapy.
Having interviewed people for many years from across society as a journalist, especially when later training people in presentation and media skills Penny became particularly aware of people's challenges and barriers to happiness and so returned to studying psychology and moved on to psychotherapy.
With clinical experience in a hospital, centre for abuse survivors, school, training centre for young people and with older people prior to private practice Penny has often undertaken multi-disciplinary work as well as working alone with clients.
A former member of the University of Warwick Medical School Advisory Board, Penny has lectured or run workshops and seminars at the University of Oxford Department of Psychiatry, Warwick University Medical School, Coventry University teaching doctors, counselling /psychotherapy students, clinical psychologists and social workersand ran courses at what is now Manchester Metropolitan University in assertiveness and negotiating skills.
She has been a member of the state Warwickshire Psychological Group for post-disaster and critical incidents work since 2007 and undertaken many training courses in working with people who have been traumatised using the very latest research.
Penny is also a trained actor, has compered and entertained people at festivals and events and has a reputation as a talented public speaker including addressing national and international conferences, better enabling her to help clients to boost their confidence.
Previously managing director of her own public relations company for nine years and having been on contract as the external relations manager of a FTSE 250 company and editor and public relations officer of a national Quasi Non Governmental Organisation (QUANGO) she is an experienced manager.
As a student she also worked in factories, shops and a hospital laundry and has worked in Switzerland and Denmark with a particular awareness of cross cultural issues having worked with people from every continent and of most religions.
She has taught on subjects such as equality and diversity with particular expertise in disability awareness and has worked with clients from the LGBT community especially including bi-sexual dilemmas and clients on transsexual journeys.
Her additional training has included helping clients with issues around abuse, addiction (including internet social networking, games and porn addiction) and 12 Step Programmes, eating disorders, bereavement and leadership.
Penny says of her work with clients: "Whatever your challenges I can be along-side you to empower you on your life's journey and some of the exciting research based techniques I use will probably surprise and delight you. Therapy is a serious matter but I have yet to meet a client where we did not also at times appropriately laugh in the therapy room."
